Is wifi just instead of bluetooth?

Don't understand why there is a wifi capability. from the manual it seems to be just to sync. My watch syncs just fine with my phone via bluetooth so presumably for me wifi is a pointless feature?
  • I assume if you change settings in your mobile app these changes will be synced over wifi to the watch as well? (Mobile app -> Garmin Connect -> Watch)?

I started out thinking wifi was nonsense, but it is growing on me more and more ;)

    pecol lake

well i would give a go except the cable seems faulty. Power goes through just fine but no data, laptop doesn't even see the watch.... Tested the old garmin and that was fine as are other usb things.
Bit strange that a brand new cable is goofed.
oh well, Bluetooth it is then!

Did you install Garmin Express on your laptop before plugging in the 5X?

Sure the purpose of WiFi is faster sync... But with F5X if there is a BT sync in progress you cannot longer sync with WiFi... Now with F3HR this was working fine: with message there is a sync in progress do you want to cancel doing so would then sync just fine via WiFi. On F5X no cancelation possible...
Maybe I miss a setting somewhere? Such as giving priority to sync via WiFi?

    Thanks

One major functionality piece missing is the ability to connect to a new wifi hotspot on the go.

Hotspots such as Starbucks and those with a proxied token connection aren't supported - but these are known when a search is complete, due to the way they broadcast the network and upon connection. So they could be excluded from any found network list directly from the watch, with the watch only showing valid networks. Select a network, cumbersomely enter password, job done. It would be a great emergency feature for uploading.

I'd like a method to connect to a new wifi network whilst on the move - even if that means a painful process to connect to it by manually selecting the password characters on the screen. As a backup it would be great. I was hoping to downgrade to a dumb phone and use the wifi on the watch during events, but cannot upload after without using Garmin express on a computer to first sync the wifi, which makes it redundant whilst traveling.

I'll place a feature request to Garmin.
  • Just found this thread after searching for WiFi sync topics for 935.

I hate Garmin phone app is it grew to monster size of 80mb - so wifi syncs work just fine and faster versus the app itself.

Only issue is that apps (downloaded on website) do not sync that way - if they had - it would be a killer feature for me.

YES! I was surprised that CIQ apps and widgets updated so slow, and I concluded they simply can't use wi-fi. I suspect that CIQ SDK would need an update to make this possible. Devs would want to just go to "the internet" and trust the SDK to provide the optimum route. I suspect this would be a big change...
  • When it comes it installing apps, that's the Garmin backend servers, and has nothing to do with the CIQ SDK. The only routes the Garmin backends has today to install apps are GCM and Garmin Express.
