Totally loving the watch, but when I'm away from my technology is there anyway of creating a course using a mobile app or web site (garmin connect desktop is not usable on a mobile phone) and syncing it with garmin connect?

@majkim6, sorry no, we'd love to but it will not be possible. The routeCourse app uses two programming features (persisted content and intents) that Garmin has only made available on certain devices, all the ones that we currently support it on. My understanding is that the other watches will not be getting this feature.
  • Routecourse

GraphHopper looks like a great addition to plan trail routes. Before I upgrade to the premium routecourse I just need to sort an issue Im having with all courses planed with the site. Planning and downloading is fine but when I come to view a course, on any flavour of map, I get the following. Any ideas?

Another 5X user has reported this too, and it seems to be a quirk of the Fenix 5X with some routes (possibly all, although the other user had mixed results).

We're sending the exact same FIT files to the Fenix 5X that we've been downloading to the routeCourse app since it was launched, and they work great on the other devices (including the Fenix 5 and 5S), so my current assumption is that this is a bug in the 5X firmware, but I am on the lookout for further information.

There appears to be a workaround though: if you go to the map from Navigation it does this but it you go into by choosing an Activity and using it as the course it's ok. (I may have those backwards, as I do not have a 5X myself to experiment with.)

  • A very helpful Fenix 5X user of routeCourse has determined the following pattern for what works, and the good news seems to be that is it only the "preview" of the course that it is messed-up on the 5X, and that is then ok when using it:

    - Launch via Activity:
Activity > Navigation > Course > Map => Preview with hashed (cross-hatched) lines
Activity > Navigation > Course > Do Course => OK (it is only the preview that does not work)
    - Launch via Navigation:
Navigation > Course > Map => Preview with hashed (cross-hatched) lines
Navigation > Course > Do Course => OK (it is only the preview that does not work)

    The best option?

The route course option definitely works, the hashed maps appears to be nothing to worry about, it follows the course just fine.

Cool fiddle as well.. you can copy Strava Activities by pasting the URL into the web site, it can be anyone's account and you don't have to be a Strava premium customer either.

This is easily the best app I've found. cheers.

I can confirm the exact same behaviour, regardless of how the route got onto the 5x (I first saw it after having updated the maps, and for a moment had a near heart-attack thinking that I'd managed to completely bugger up my watch)

Do you mean that you have seen this for GPX or FIT files copied to the watch manually, not using routeCourse or another app? If so, does it matter if they are FIT or GPX?

    Thanks.
