gps accuracy during Open water

A bit disapointed after my first open water swim today....here's the activity : https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1669675336

Distance seems to be exagerated if compared to my old fenix 3 and gps tracking is not good. Last firmware 2.90 used.
  • Would you post a similar swim in the same location doing laps that you recorded on the F3?

GPS tracking with these devices is never really good as it is derived from occasional glimpses of satellite when your arm is out of the water and then computed with an algorithm that tries to make some sense of it. Unless you/we can compare with an earlier swim recorded on your F3 it's not clear if it really is better or worse.

That said, when the 920 first came out, the OW swim really was atrocious. A few tweaks later and it was much better.

Seems more accurate even if less than a 920...completely agreed

  • You lost me when you used the words "GPS" and "Accuracy" in the same sentence referring to your 5X

I'm extremely disappointed with my Fenix 3 HR. I participated in an OW yesterday and I compared my results with a friend using and old Suunto. As differences between tracks in OW are to be expected and none of us knew what results were more accurate, we decided to do a dumb yet representative test. One our way back in the car, we tested our watches against out car's tachometer and guess what: My friend's Suunto matched my car's measurements for more than 10km while my F3HR was off by 300m at the end of the first kilometer already. I very much regret owning this watch after seeing this along with the hundreds of posts dealing with this topic.
  • I thought I wouldn't create a new thread but will resurrect the old one. :)

My watch is currently running 15.1 with GPS 2.51, I'm not sure if this is linked to the update since I hadn't swim since autumn (May). But the recent tracks this month look terrible. Here a few examples

here is similar track the same beach from 1st example but with 12.0 firmware

Anyone else experiencing the same issue?

    Cheers,

    Denis
