Review on fellrnr.com

There is a (early access) review by Jonathan Savage of the Fenix 5X:

  • Like all recent Garmin reviews by fellrnr, he refuses to provide setup details for the fenix 5X. GPS or GPS + GLONASS? Who kows? Every second or Smart recording? Your guess is as good as mine. More worthless junk science.

    HTH
  • Agreed. When I challenged him to try every second recording he replied that he didn't see a marked difference between it and smart recording.

Quite a few continued asking for him to actually try and test it. I didn't see him post anything at all.

Any connection between him having been helping Suunto out and being overly negative on the Fenix 5 series perhaps?
  • negative on Most recent garmin. Maybe baised... maybe not. That said, I think all of that that had a large number of garmin, do believe the GPS is a bit more challenged compared to old model. The reason? who knows. maybe the chip maybe all the added complexity. But what it comes down to, is it good enough for you? Its a personal question.

For me, if I ask 100 people at the end of a 50mile ultra, I'll get 50 different distances from 46miles to 52+. As long as the thing doesnt lockup (My F3 would during Ultras). I'm ok with it. Minority view maybe. but I dont expect it to be accurate to a gnats butt..

He's in love with Stryd though!

Actually, he did say in his Facebook thread that he might later test the Fenix 5 with one sec, but that it would take a while because he's doing less running these days, I think because of a nagging injury. Will he do it? Hard to say.

Can't wait to see how this thread blossoms once the leaves fill in on the trees.
  • heard of the stryd.. but never really read anything about it

yes, they sure do sound in love with it. I've never read or heard much about the stryd. I know using a footpod many have claimed that distance is much more accurate than GPS distance. but what always held me back was the calibration. it seems complex. also, since I'm a trail, Ultra running, my speed, pace, and cadence vary greatly. so not sure how a footpod would respond to that.

would love to learn more I guess, but not sure what to search on, or even look for.
  • I bought a Stryd two weeks ago and I am absolutely in love with it too.
Let me know if you are looking for one as I have an extra unit that's still unsealed.

Stryd has a 30 day return policy, so you might want to give it a try. It's promoted as being accurate over a broad range of paces, doesn't need to be recalibrated when you change shoes. Calibration is simple. Run a known distance, (say a track) see what the Stryd says you ran, and if there's a difference, calculate the factor that you need to apply to the Stryd in order to bring it to that known distance. So, for example, if ran 400m and the stryd says you ran 390m, then dial in a 102.5 calibration factor.

I bought one a few weeks ago. I think it's great. In addition to the 3D accelerometers, it also has a gyro, and "environmental" sensors, sensors that Styrd support wouldn't elaborate on in a recent online chat. I was told they're working on a firmware update that would take into account wind! Maybe there's a mini pitot tube on the pod? Don't know. A pitot tube facing the front could measure your foot's airspeed, and the accelerometers could measure your foot-speed across the ground. The difference would be wind speed!

is it waterproof? I go out of my way to intentionally go into stream crossings. sometimes stand around in them to cool the feet off as well.

I didnt notice it on amazon..

Nah, if you get it wet, you throw it away. : ) Dude, the thing is hermetically sealed! I think it's good down to 1 meter for 30 minutes. It charges through induction...no ports. You just lay the thing on the small charging platform for an hour or so.

If you look around you may find a 10% off coupon.

    https://www.stryd.com

Go to their page and start a chat. They're great, will answer every single question you have, and if the guy doesn't have an answer, (rare) he'll immediately text someone and get the answer. Great support, the best I've ever experienced. They don't BS you.
  • GPS / Stryd question

Can anyone tell me… when the Stryd is used in conjunction with the Fenix 5x... is it possible to configure one data field that shows distance as measured by GPS and another that shows distance as measured by the Stryd?
