Have had a livetrack session stuck now twice

If i select some settings e.g. wifi update. Watch says has to finish live track session first, it attempts todo this but fails.

Anyone seen this before ??

Firmware 2.90 supposedly fixed that, however I still encountered the issue today. The fix seems to be to a) deactivate automatic start of LiveTrack in the GC app and then b) to manually start and stop a session. I think the issue is related to the watch losing BT connecticity to the phone during LiveTrack and then can't reestablish the LiveTrack session connection. Hence, the phone never gets the signal from the watch to end the session. I'm hoping they get it sorted soon.

I literally just did my first run with the watch and I was greeted with this exact issue. But trying to self diagnose the issue I deleted the watch from GC to see if re adding it would help. But every time I try to pair it again the watch says "LiveTrack Started" and the phone fails to pair. I can't manually stop the live track on the watch either it fails. And resetting it back to factory somehow it still inherits that lovetrack is running and won't turn off.
I have spent hours today looking for the solution. I honestly feeling like I wish I didn't buy a Fenix as the time I have lost trying for a solution today and to more or less have an unusable watch unless I sync with a USB cord is pointless. I'm extremely disappointed in Garmin. Will ring their customer service when they open on Monday to ask for a replacement watch if I can't fix it by then
  • This is something I have reported to the beta dev team (see first post in the latest beta sticky thread) as it's still present with 2.96; but not quite the same as 2.90 perhaps. With 2.96, if you have auto-start livetrack enabled, but when you start your activity you are not connected go the phone, the next time you connect to the phone/GCM the Livetrack starts (even though the activity is finished and saved) and you get this annoying state where you can't sync properly via BLE or WiFi because livetrack is running. Like I said, the Garmin folks have been made aware of this for some time, but it's clearly proving problematic to nail down what's causing it and provide a fix.

All that aside, whilst we wait for a software fix, how do you get out of this state without doing hard resets and the like? Well, what I've found works for me is:

    1. With the watch still connected to the phone via BLE, open GCM on my iPhone
    2. then go to the Livetrack menu and un-check auto-start livetrack (if it's on) or manually end any livetrack session showing
    3. then manually start livetrack from GCM (I know, the watch already has livetrack started, but bear with me)
    4. Once the Fenix 5 displays the message Livetrack Started (you don't need to start an activity app on the watch though) then on the Fenix 5 go in to the Menu>Settings>Phone and select to end the Livetrack Session

The process above seems to work most of the time, but another longer way I found (that I know worked with 2.90) is to do steps 1-3 as described, but then actually start, finish, end, save and sync a proper GPS activity on the watch. Basically there is something not right with auto-start livetrack, but if you get the watch to 're-calibrate' to being manual start livetrack it seems to clear the problems without a hard reset.

After several hours of diagnosing the issue, the only way I could fix it was connecting a second Garmin device to GC that then gave me the option that wasn't there before as the Fenix wouldn't sync, to end live track - as it only appears when there is a paired device in GC. I then reset the watch one more time and wala. Hope the issue is fixed in a new software release. Sounds like it's been an ongoing problem for some time when the phone-watch connection is broken during automatic live track. Just definitely DONT remove the device from GC during it or it will never pair again in an endless loop unless you have a second Garmin device around. 😐

Well...crap. Did this hoping that I could "reconnect" my fenix 5. Now what? I have a VA HR + Edge 510. Can I use one of these to reset?
  • Before you reset your Garmin, try uninstalling the Garmin Connect app and then reinstalling it. I went through the same scenario and just resetting my Fenix 3 hr wouldn't fix it. It seems the issue is the watch trying to re-establish the live tracking when it attempts to connect to the app because the app stores the settings for LiveTrack. Once the app is uninstalled then reinstalled, the settings are also back to default and the Garmin doesn't try to re-establish the LiveTrack. This worked for me, I'm curious if there's no need to reset the Garmin at all.
