I have been using my Fenix 5 for about a week now, I have found the map overlay on my OWS routes have been pretty awesome. My issue/concern is still the distance calculations, I am set on Data Every Second, GPS plus Glonass. I am waiting 5 seconds before starting my swim, but am ending up with much less yardage than my same people using the 920's. I just spent a hour setting swim markers in a kayak, same drill, paddling super slow, no less than 25-30 yards from the bank and the watch shows 12 and counting, taking over a minute sitting still for the yardage to catchup which is killing my swim average. Anyone else experiencing this, or have another setting suggestion? Chris
Can't contribute much on this other than to say that the DCR OWS test (single test admittedly) showed the f5 in good correspondence on distance with the fenix 3 he had on the swim buoy:
I have watched the same video, I guess my concern is finishing a swim, or just being stopped in the kayak and still and seeing the yardage distance adding up.
You need to understand that any GPS will continue to track satellites even though you might be static. There will be changes in the data the GPS receives from these satellites that might indicate a change in position. Thus distance will appear to increase even though are not moving.
It's a fundamental aspect of ALL GPS receivers.
Re the OWS. When the 920 came out the OWS was a bit patchy to say the least. it took Garmin a couple of iterations of the algorithm before they cleaned it up. Might well be the same with the 5X.
