Navigation course : no full screen display available

In ref to previous discussion here : https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?371913-Multiple-map-layers&p=967149#post967149

I confirm : with a navigation course, it is not possible to display the map on full screen : whatever your config is for the map (0 datafield in my case), the bottom of the screen always shows the distance to the end of the course (or distance to the course if you are off course)

Very disappointed because I prefer to enjoy a "full screen" map, that is still not easy to see during a trail :mad:
  • I thought I was the only one with this problem, so I made my own topic with the same question:
    https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?373802-Track-without-navigation

At my former watch (forerunner 310xt) I had a workaround. I turned gps off and told my watch to follow a course. After the course was loaded, I turned GPS on. With this workaround there was no link between the track on my screen and the navigation. So on my screen i saw just the track and my position.
Haven't found a workaround like this for my Fenix.
  • So, the general conclusion is that this is not possible at the moment? Even though some few users have gotten it working.

Well, I guess there is an upside to the fact that the 5X is nearly impossible to get hold of in Europe. Maybe this will be ironed out while waiting.

"Some few"? That would be one only on this thread. Whatever, it is an issue that Garmin needs to resolve.

I am UK. Got my F5X from Cotswolds Outdoors last week. They are back on pre-order now but I would bet they will be first to get new batches.

Your problem (TBT notices on a F5) is not the same problem that is the topic in this thread.
Here the problem is the lower information field in map screen.
As noted in other threads, you need to transfer a tcx (with no embedded course waypoints) file rather than a gpx file into newfiles.
  • In a recent mail to the the beta team, I reported a couple of bugs and asked to consider adding some features (see below). One of the bugs I mentioned was the single data field:

    Part of my mail:

BUG #1: roundtrip course is not avaible when using trail running app.
BUG #2: when navigating, there is no way to turn off distance field on map view. Thats very frustrating

Potential bug #3: (I wasn't able to replicate this so far, but it might be still there)
When watch is set to metric units and a new LT pace is found, it is displayed as "pace value" / "mi"
I would expect to see this in a standard (metric) min/1km format
Potential bug #4 (also didn't replicate it so far but it was there in 2.9): autolap messes interval training: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?374037-BUG-(feature-)-Autolap-messes-interval-trainig

Please allow me to suggest some things that work on older garmin devices and are something that I, as a ultrarunner consider as basic (not to mention, that I updated from F3 hoping they all are there by default):

MISSING FEATURE: Working coursepoints - there is no way to add working coursepoints / waypoints for a route (prepared in basecamp), so that the watch can show distance to next waypoint while navigating.

MISSING FEATURE: auto valleys / summits when navigating: my 10 year old gpsmap62s has this and it's the only reason I still keep the device. When uploading a GPX with route it automatically calculates summits and valleys out of gpv elevation and shows distance / evelation to next.

MISSING FEAUTRE: zoomable elevation plot while navigating a route. While on a 100k (or even 50k) ultra run, elevation plot is not readeable. Please add an option to zoom in / zoom out for a user defined scale (say 5k, 10k, 20k...)

    Beta team response:
    2. We are currently looking into allowing the user to remove this data field.

    Missing features 1 and 2.
Yes, they are missing from the Garmin native software but both are possible with third party software. I use SportTracks 3 with the Course and Waypoint plugin, converting the exported tcx to a fit file with the McBadger tool.

WillCW I don't want to make an off topic here, but since I used to use ST3 with C&W plugin regularly, could I ask you for a PM with some more hints and possibly some help to make it work? It's something I've been desperately looking for but failed to solve by my own.
If you wish you can drop some lines in my thread I posted a couple of days ago https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?374329-How-to-add-waypoints-to-a-course

I'd greatly appreciate some help in here.
    Regards

See my reply in that thread.

    Oh, sorry.
I thougt you meant the part at the bottom of the screen as I showed in my screenshot.

Well I did. But the problem you refer to in your other post I assumed you were refering to the TBT screens that pop up and occupy the whole screen. The two are connected but not the same. You can get rid of the latter with appropriate preparation of your course but not the permanent map lower quarter-screen information field.
  • Fixed in current beta

    3.21 Beta Release:
    - Added support for hiding the distance to next field, shown by default on the map page while navigating. (Settings > Navigation > Data Screens > Map > Data Field)
