2 questions: a) Option:Save Heart Rate Variability? b) HRM: Download Heart Rate Data?

Hi Garmin enthusiasts,

I've been using the Fenix 5 for a week now - I really like it!
I have two questions though... features I just don't understand:

1) in the menu Physiological Metrics, there is an option at the bottom, that says "save heart rate variability on/off". What does this do? I don't get it... when I do an HFV stress test, this info is synced into Garmin Connect even though this "Save HRV" is switched to Off in the menu. So what does it do?

2) After doing an exercise with the HRM-Tri where the heart rate is permanently displayed and watch & HRM-tri are in reach all the time, there is an option to "download heart rate data".
I thought that this is only done (automatically...) when the chest strap is out of reach of the watch for more than 30 seconds.
I tried using this menu option and what it does is it kind of duplicates the activity with very similar result. So what's the point of this option?

Thx for your help,

Chris
  • I can answer the first question. If you enable the Save HRV option, heart rate variability data gets stored for every activity. You don't see the results on Garmin Connect, but if you export activities to other services (e. g. SportTracks) they can use them for more analytics.

    Thx a lot - makes sense :-).

I think a found a solution for the 2nd question:
The HRM-Swim and HRM-Tri have the ability to store up to 18 hours of heart rate data. If an activity was completed, but the heart rate data was not downloaded from the strap, the heart rate data can be downloaded to the watch after the activity has been saved.

It seems like this option is kind of a manual fallback.
