Sleep recorded while on charge

Charged watch and noted it said I was sleeping during the charge! Think that should be an easy fix!

Mine does the same. Best 8 hours of deep sleep I've ever had ;) lol!
My 3hr did the same thing though. I guess at least it doesn't record a fake HR also!
  • Were you charging it between your specified sleep hours? If yes, then how is it meant to work out you weren't sleeping if the watch isn't moving?

Ahh ..... because it's on charge?

What data should it record when on charge? Activities only is the answer and the reason being you cannot wear it on charge and you certainly couldn't wear it to bed on charge.
  • "Sleep" is actually processed by the garmin Servers when the data is uploaded, and is based on movement within the configured "sleep time".

When you say "charging", was it with a wall charger, or plugged into a pc/mac (in mass store mode)? It will likely count that time as "sleep" in either case, but in mass store mode, instead of having no movement in that time, it would have no movement data at all during that time.

I'm guessing that if you turned off the watch, you'd also see sleep data during that time.

Wall charged. Had started the charge about two hours before my sleep times, then forgot and put it on when I got up a few hours later. It recorded the time between charge start and me putting the watch on as deep sleep!

Given the location of the charging port I would have thought that if its charging then ignore sleep. Based on upload data makes sense though - maybe could upload charge state too. If in an in charge state, then ignore potential for sleep until an off charge state appears in data. Also no HR data would be a good indicator - less the wearer died in their sleep!

  • Unfortunately your suggestion fits your use case, not mine. I'd like sleep to be recorded every night by my watch. Some times I put it on to charge just as I'm going to sleep and I disconnect it just as I wake up. I'd rather have deep sleep recorded than no sleep.

The trouble is for every use case, there is an equally valid opposite. You might argue that you have an option which controls what the watch does but if you had that for every single function then there will be 100s of options.

Its not really a big deal, the sleep data novelty wore off a few weeks after I had the MS band years before. The band didn't assume sleep when on charge though.

Perhaps it should record it as 'estimated/non validated' for the hours set for sleep or something like that, if there is no valid activity. At least then, if sleep data is important, it'll be easy to take out fake data.

    Mick,
  • Why not have manual sleep like 920XT

While I appreciate the ability to guess sleep if I forget, my Garmin 920XT allowed me to put it in sleep mode and exit when I wake up - very accurate that way

Would be easy to add that

I also agree that based on the charging port being on the watch back you can't wear it sleeping and charge it at the same time so it should not enter sleep if charging
  • But I can sleep whilst it is charging ;-)
