Adding topo 24k maps to Fenix 5

Have had my Fenix 5 for about a week now, really happy with it.

Today I purchased the Topo 24k Northeast SD card. How do I get this loaded onto the Fenix?

Thanks.

You'll need the download version vs the SD card version. It will automatically download to your Fenix 5x via Garmin Express & Garmin Connect when you plug in your watch via USB. I think it also can download it via wifi but I always hardwire download stuff that important. It takes like an hour(or at least my North Central maps did).
There is no SD card slot on your watch. I'm not sure you can do a SD card transfer using your computer as the transfer point onto your watch. I was thinking SD card versions are locked to staying on the actual card. So you'd have to put the actual card into your device, like the bike computers or Etrex or Nuvis vs their watches, which have no SD slot and require download.

Additionally, more maps for you to use. I don't have a F5X, but I do have some Garmin handheld GPSr units. On those, I have Garmin 24K as well as some maps based on Open Streetmap.

    Select: Routable Bicycle (Openfietsmap Lite)
Under "Choose a predefined country:" select your state.
Under "Request your map or download it directly:" you'll either see a download link or a place for your email address. For either option you're wanting to download the file with "gmapsupp" in the filename. Unzip the file and you'll have the .img that's placed directly into the \Garmin folder on the 5X.

Enjoy a map that most likely has tons of trails. Oh, and it's routable.

A 5 and not a 5X? You can't put maps on a 5, period. You can on a 5X, but not from an SD card. The maps are locked to the SD card, so your best bet is simply to return the card.

Thanks for the info. Garmin sure goes out of their way to make things difficult. Yes, I do have 5x. Hopefully REI will accept return of sim card version.
  • As NAKEDBABYTOES says, the download version will work, although it gets locked to your device (and I think you can also have a copy on your computer to use with BaseCamp). As ChevronLugs says, free maps are available. You might want to try them out before buying from Garmin. I use both TOPO 24k US Northeast and OpenStreetMaps (I use the ones from openmtbmap.org, which are not quite free) on my Epix. (When I bought the TOPO maps from Garmin years ago they came unlocked. That's no longer the case.) OSM maps are more likely to have trails on them, and they're updated very quickly. I don't think Garmin has updated the TOPO maps in a long time.
  • cliff notes on the map versions

Can someone explain some of the names/terms used in these map maps. I see TOPO (i understand that one as topology or topological) but I see 24k 100k 40k etc. I dont know what they mean. Also, how do you know which maps will work with the round-trip routing function on the F5x?
  • great thanks!

was looking at this site. and at least in the US, it gets not only down to the state level, but the county as well. Thats such a small region, a single county. Is there something like "the US midwest" or "US east coast" etc etc.

Sorry, I tried to find it in the FAQ but I couldn't, what's the difference between the Routable Bicycle and the New Style Routable?

    Thanks!

TOPO is topographic. Just like paper topographic maps, they have altitude lines (contours) that show you the topography of the area as well as roads, trails, etc. 24k and 100k are scales, so basically the smaller the number, the more detailed the map will be, but it will also be bigger. They correspond in the US to the 7.5" and 15" topographic maps that USGS produces. The maps that work with the navigation functions are called "routable" because they have the extra digital information included to allow the device to "know" that here's a road and it's paved and it goes this way and it's name is X. Not all maps are routable, and the ones that aren't are basically just pictures. The 24k maps that Garmin sells are routable, the 100k maps are not. Generally all OSM maps are routable unless they've been stripped of this information (as the maps intended for the original Fenix were since it couldn't route via map).

Not super helpful, but according to this Open Street Map manual, the new style routable "has an improved rendering style with a few more features (bridges, tunnels, oneway arrows)" and the routable bicycle is recommended "if you use it primarily for bicycle trips. This map is especially suitable for recreational cycling." But I guess this doesn't really say why the bicycle map is recommended for bicycling...
