Problem with the loading cable

I received my 5x yesterday. Unfortunately I have problems with the loading cable. The connection to the PC is not stable and need to bend the cable slightly at the connector to the watch. Has anyone have similar problems?
Garmin Support will send a new cable and i hope it solves the problem and there is no defect at the connector of the watch.
By the way I am not very happy with the new design of the connector as dirt will get in there quite easy. A plastic cap would be nice to cover it.
All the best

  • I should really send my second (Silver pin) one back today.. no guarantee of a gold pin and really don't want to be without it for two weeks... sigh..
  • Had this happen to me today. As far as I know, this was only the 2nd time I tried to connect. I successfully loaded latest firmware a while back. Today, was trying to update maps as well as watch face settings. Would not stay connected no matter the position. Two different computers, latest versions of software, etc. Did connector wear out after one prior use!?

So, back to REI it went, as defective, 10 months after purchase. I hate doing that, but what's a guy to do? Just a Fenix 3 and Apple Watch for me at the moment.....
  • my warranty literally runs out tomorrow with REI so i'm going back to the store with it tonight.

this is the only thing i've ever bought with REI, what can i expect from them? do they send it in for repair? do they offer an exchange? will they offer a refund?
  • Generally you'll have no issues with REI. If it is in their policy, they don't ask a lot of questions.
  • My replacement 5X, which arrived months ago with the "gold" connectors, originally worked great. It immediately connected via USB to my MBP, and was able to sync with GE. Because I typically connect the watch to GCM app, I had not tried to connect to my computer for several months. Now, unfortunately, there is absolutely NO connection via USB, other than charging which occurs immediatly. GE doesn't see the watch, and the device does not appear in the finder as connected. I have rebooted watch, computer, made sure GE is UTD, and the watch in on the current firmware. YIKES! I really do not want to return this watch again. Any suggestions??

I had the same issue with my first 5X, it worked fine but suddenly there was no way (hard reset, different computers, force usb moe, whatever) to get it into USB connection mode again although charging worked fine. The watch had to be returned.
  • Same problem with a FR935, for the second time (watch was replaced for this already). I don't think there is any other solution than sending it back again?
  • My F5x just did the re-connection today for the first time since being exchanged to the Gold Contacts. So I guess downhill from here.
  • After 6 months today my trouble started again with the gold pin unit. I even used a rubber cap to protect the connector.
I have no idea what caused this. When I loaded it at my PC the last time the connection was rock stable. Now it was nearly impossible to get a connection.
Just an idea. Could there be a connection with the big windows update that cam a couple of day ago?
I really hope the problem is not again a hardware issue....
  • I use Linux only and my FR935 was replaced twice for the same USB issue. But I sure hope that your watch doesn't have a hardware problem though.
