Problem with the loading cable

I received my 5x yesterday. Unfortunately I have problems with the loading cable. The connection to the PC is not stable and need to bend the cable slightly at the connector to the watch. Has anyone have similar problems?
Garmin Support will send a new cable and i hope it solves the problem and there is no defect at the connector of the watch.
By the way I am not very happy with the new design of the connector as dirt will get in there quite easy. A plastic cap would be nice to cover it.
All the best

  • Sending mine back this week. Wasn't going to bother but trying to get that map update installed reminded how bad the cable issue can be!

I haven't been able to install the map update due to a very sporadic cable connection. When plugged in, my 5x either never appears as a mass storage device, or it appears and disappears a few times a minute. Obviously, that's not reliable enough to initiate the map update.

On the other hand, despite reading numerous threads that describe questionable accuracy, my 5x has been every bit as accurate as any other wrist worn GPS device I've ever owned.

With that said, my concern is that if I return the device, I would hate to end up with a unit that isn't as accurate as the one that I've had for the last few months. For those of you who have had your 5x replaced due to an unreliable connection, how has the GPS accuracy been on the replacement unit?
  • wonder how long these "gold pin" versions have been available? i was thinking of getting a fenix for my wife to replace her old vivosmart hr something or other. i'd hate to buy another "silver pin" one like mine. my poorly connecting 5x has been great, except for things like beta installs or map updates which are a pain to get copied over. i'd hate to have 2 watches with that issue to deal with.

I simply can't part with the watch and I can't do it... unless Garmin sends me a replacement first.
That's impossible... we know they'll do whatever it takes to SAVE on the damage caused by the pins of the first releases.

I regret having sold my F3.

I have a replacement, new, 5x from Garmin. I had an email last week, phoned them on Monday, posted my previously replaced 5x on Tuesday and got the new one on Friday.

It has the gold pins and a serial number of 54H069xxx.

I have only had it for 24hours, so wouldn?t want to make a definitive statement. However, there have been no connection problems at all. I have tried several different cables and USB ports, all with no problems at all. I have deliberately ?wiggled? the cable, again with no problems at all. This is all completely different from previous 5xs.

I think it?s looking like Garmin have solved the problem.

It has been frustrating, but I think Garmin have given me excellent customer support. I often hear them criticised, but I can?t join in here. I have to say, ?well done and thanks ?. I have had 4 F5xs in total plus an additional 2 cables. It has taken a while, but it really looks like the saga has come to an end.

Bless you who can part with the watch... I'm training 4 hours a day and can't really stay without it for a month because that's how long it takes them to replace it.

To answer my own question, silver pins are still in circulation. bought my wife a fenix 5S for her birthday yesterday, same silver pins as my 5x, same flaky connection. given that i probably wont be running betas on hers and no need for map updates, i suppose its less of an issue than on mine. still wouldve been nice to get a newer one with stable connection.
  • Finally got around to putting mine in the post back to Garmin for replacement. Will see if the replacement (hopefully with gold pins) fixes it!

Cost me 28 dollars to ship! Asked if can get a refund on that because returning a defective product that already cost me $850!
  • After one week of waiting I received today my replacement F5x. The new watch has gold pins instead of silver ones I had in my old device. I confirm that the USB connection with a PC is finally very stable. Problem solved in my case :)
