Problem with the loading cable

I received my 5x yesterday. Unfortunately I have problems with the loading cable. The connection to the PC is not stable and need to bend the cable slightly at the connector to the watch. Has anyone have similar problems?
Garmin Support will send a new cable and i hope it solves the problem and there is no defect at the connector of the watch.
By the way I am not very happy with the new design of the connector as dirt will get in there quite easy. A plastic cap would be nice to cover it.
All the best

  • Which one did you get?

    This one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1M-USB-Data-...53.m2749.l2649

Took a while to get here, but it's solid.

Pretty-much proves it's the cable and not the watch, at least in my case. I stuck the OEM cable in my car since when I'm traveling I really only care about charging, and am using the knock-off for connecting to my computer at the house.

There is another review on the same one that says it won't data transfer (at all), however -- so as with all knockoffs, apparently there can be QC issues. I got a good one.
  • just upgraded from Fenix 3 to Fenix 5x and yes I have the same problem. USB Cable data connection is very unstable. I'd say by bending cable, reconnecting, dancing around, doing voodoo magic I barely got device to be online. Manged to only setup wifi.
But guess what, connected with same cable same laptop via USB Hub and it was perfectly stable, so managed to update all maps. And that takes more than half an hour..
I'm not and expert in USB specs but I guess Fenix 5 crappy usb connector is running on the edge of USB spec limits and there might be a difference between usb controllers used in PCs and hubs in a way they tolerate voltage drops(?) on usb data lines. That would explain why same some guys report problems on one setup but have success with different PC.

For seven bucks can get a couple - will get it a go. I find if I leave the watch alone - once its got a stable connection - its fine but its still annoying!

Not to sound like a broken record but I have the same issue. Went through Garmin support who quickly sent out a new cable which is actually worse than the original one. I have been added to the research case and will be notified when there is a resolution. It's very unfortunate they went to such an ill-designed method to charge as the watch is awesome otherwise.

Just an update on this from my experience.

I have now had 3 watches. S/Ns 1108, 20845, and currently 36962, so clearly increasing serial numbers and presumably progressively later production dates. They have all exhibited the same behaviour of extremely fragile connection to USB. I have tried a total of 8 Garmin USB cables and can't tell the difference between any of them. With all the cables and watches I have been confidently told this will solve the problem - but clearly it hasn't.

Garmin have clearly been very helpful with all these exchanges. However, none of them have made any difference, which is clearly very disappointing

Garmin do recognise there is a problem, but do not have a solution as yet. I have a case number "1335589" and communication from Garmin Europe last week stated "your case is still open and we are continuing to wait for a response from the USA". Hopefully this will be soon, and then we can have a flurry of posts on this thread from people who have had the issue fully resolved.

After my first call a few months ago on this issue to Garmin in which they "added me to the ticket" I finally called back last week to get an update. Garmin are sending me a new watch and cable which I am hopeful, but not optimistic, will address the issue.

If it does not, has anyone had luck in getting their watch just refunded by Garmin since they are well outside the store return policy (only time I have not bought at REI and now I regret it).

I tried the same eBay cable tickerguy listed above, and it didn't help - the watch still disconnects with that cable the same way it does with the OEM cable. Since I have a spare now, I'm going to see if I can make any modifications to the cable to get it to work...
  • I have been having the same trouble. Tried all usb ports and tried using a usb hub, hub okay for charging only. Garmin sent me a new cable. Still the same problem. I sent watch back and I am currently waiting for a replacement. Will update when it arrives. Fingers crossed.

Has anyone had a completely working solution for this problem from garmin yet?

i have heard nothing more from garmin about a solution at all
  • I have had my replacement watch for about a week now and It seems to be stable when connected to my mac. It even works with a USB hub, which my previous one did not.
