Problem with the loading cable

I received my 5x yesterday. Unfortunately I have problems with the loading cable. The connection to the PC is not stable and need to bend the cable slightly at the connector to the watch. Has anyone have similar problems?
Garmin Support will send a new cable and i hope it solves the problem and there is no defect at the connector of the watch.
By the way I am not very happy with the new design of the connector as dirt will get in there quite easy. A plastic cap would be nice to cover it.
All the best

  • The two additional cables that Garmin sent arrived today. They behave the same as the other replacement. Plug in, connection, go to put watch down and disconnect. Jiggle until connect etc. Maybe confused watch.. Windows sits there beeping - adding and removing device.

I'm keeping my original - at least that one seems to hold the connection long enough to put down and not touch the watch again.
  • I've seen this problem a couple of times. Watch charges but does not appear as mass storage on my mac.
Restarting the watch, simply powering it off and on again, has fixed the issue for me.
    Software problem?
  • I had a strange episode with my 5X not connecting properly to my PC. It was showing as charging but wouldn't mount as a drive. I killed Garmin Express and it suddenly connected properly. Might be worth trying if you get a similar scenario.
  • Yeah same thing here most of time charging is ok but dataconnection rarely and only if i wriggle the connector on the watch or touch it or press it .Filed a support case so will see. But seeing this thread it happens too much.

I am about to return the watch.

Garmin have been very helpful with me in trying to resolve this issue. They have sent a replacement cable and then a replacement F5x.

Unfortunately those things have not solved the problem. My latest communication from Garmin states:

"The issue you are referring to is something that we are aware of as recently reported, and are working hard towards a resolution, however, we do not have a timeframe for this to be completed as yet.
I have added you to the following case so that you will be notified once this issue has been resolved.
    Case #: 1335589
    I’m sorry for the inconvenience."

It might be worth people referring to this if they are communicating with Garmin on the issue.

I must add that I am completely happy with the F5x apart from this issue.

I never really had issues save for the odd occasion. Now it seems to be happening more frequently. Today I really struggled to get it charging/recognised. Really happy with the watch otherwise, but I feel this new charging mechanism is a bit of a downgrade (maybe its just my experience?).

To those with issues, does your cable rock up and down if you push it? To those without issues, does your cable rock up and down if you push it?

I really wish Garmin would have a proper offline-sync to phone method because you can still charge it up fine.
  • I received an f5X today from a web purchase at a retailer in Florida. They received a new shipment last week and shipped immediately. The loading cable is really tight; no rocking back and forth at all. Zero problems connecting to Garmin Connect to install 4.10 and apps/widgets/etc.

  • So I just got mine last night and I am/was having this issue. So I started to tinker around I found that on my win10 machine it would jump back and forth from connected to disconnect while waiting for me to select "mass storage mode" (MSM for short) then after that it would still bounce up and down. I plug it into my MBP and it wouldn't show up till I selected "MSM" while this was happening GC was able to see the device but wasn't able to sync it. So I went onto the watch and made the default MSM and plugged it back in and both the MBP and win10 was able to see it without issue even while I was flicking the cable. I wonder if there is an issue software wise with the device going bonkers trying to move from garmin mode to mass storage. Something else with this, I tested to see if it was GC or the watch I opened basecamp and when I didn't select MSM, basecamp was able to see the device but not able to send anything to the device or read the maps once I selected MSM it started to bounce again on both my MBP and win10.

So it would seem for at least my device keeping it MSM and not garmin allows me to sync just fine.
