Problem with the loading cable

I received my 5x yesterday. Unfortunately I have problems with the loading cable. The connection to the PC is not stable and need to bend the cable slightly at the connector to the watch. Has anyone have similar problems?
Garmin Support will send a new cable and i hope it solves the problem and there is no defect at the connector of the watch.
By the way I am not very happy with the new design of the connector as dirt will get in there quite easy. A plastic cap would be nice to cover it.
All the best

My wife has just got a F5s. She has only had it for a few hours, so no definitive comment, but it hasn't yet had a problem connecting to a computer with the supplied cable.

Her cable though (which as mentioned works fine with her F5s) is no different to my cable though in connecting my F5x. If I take great care and do not touch the cable after getting it just right then a connection is made, and kept. If the cable is moved in the slightest then the connection is broken.

This has been the case now with 3 different computers (all windows 10) 6 different USB ports and a powered USB hub.

This does suggest the cable, the computers and the USB ports are not the issue, and it is the F5x that is the problem.

I am having the same issue with the cable connecting to my mac. It charges when connected but I cannot do anything else because it does not mount.

I am having the same issue where my watch will not mount to my mac. When it's connected it charges just fine.
  • I have to put some tension at the USB end connection into the PC i.e. like I am going to start bending the USB end to a right angle so the contact to the top inside part of the USB port on the computer makes a better connection and then it will mount. However like many users in this thread the slightest movement will result in a disconnect when that top contact gets broken as a result.

You might just want to cross-check your cable on your wife's F5S to fully isolate the problem as being the connection port on your F5X, but I think this is a good case to return your F5x to Garmin for a replacement.

I have tried 4 Fenix 5X and 2 cable and all of them had this issue

Sorry, I should have mentioned for completeness about my Wife's F5s.

My F5x displays a consistent behaviour with both it's own cable and the 1 that came with my wife's F5s. If I am extremely careful I can get a connection with both cables, but the slightest movement and it disconnects with either cable.

My Wife's F5s is also consistent, it will connect with either it's own cable, or the 1 that came with my F5x. This is a stable connection and is only broken by actually pulling the cable from the port, not at all by just a slight movement. In my opinion this is how I would expect things to be and is dramatically different from the behaviour of my F5x.

All the above that is described is consistent behaviour on 3 different windows 10 computers and an assortment of USB sockets.

At this moment Garmin are sending me a new cable. I am grateful they are trying to help, but clearly my experience to date makes me sceptical this is the solution. At the moment it does look like it is the F5x that is the issue. However, if Garmin are correct then that is great.
  • I got today an update from Garmin and they recommended that I replace the watch as it seems that some watches got their charge ports machines too wide, which allows for movement.
That is very unfortunate. I wish they wouldn't change the design from F3.

Interesting. I checked on the engineering case file yesterday with Garmin, and the rep told me they did not have a resolution yet.
  • Just had Garmin send me a new cable. Behaves the same as the old. On and off connection with the device appearing and disappearing in the device managed in Windows. Charging remains constant. Actually the new cable seems worse than the older one.
