Any Paddling/SUP/Rowing fenix5 users out there?

I'm very interested to hear if there are any paddlesports users out there that have used the fenix 5 for tracking their activities yet. The fenix 3 is prone to rebooting during paddling and everything points to this being as a result of hardware limitations (or bad coding, or a combination of both).

Any feedback appreciated...
  • I used indoor rowing activity 2 times (2x45') and no problem to be raised with my Fenix 5 2.4
  • No Problems to report

I have used both Indoor Rowing (x 2) and Rowing outside (x1) this week.

All works fine. No crashes, and watch appears to have very accurate stroke rate (when compared to the display of my Water Rower)

    Peter,

that's interesting - I have a water rower too that I would like get integrated on a platform for tracking progress. I wasn't aware that the F5 have an indoor rowing function, could you elaborate a bit and/or share a Strava/GarminConnect link if possible.

    thanks in advance

  • Thanks for the feedback guys... it's probably too early to tell for sure, but hopefully the improved hardware of the f5 will do the job.

Not truly integrated... The F5 has an Indoor Row mode, but it only measures stroke rate, time and calories... it does not link to the Water Rower and log distance, power or other metrics.
However the stroke rate indicated on the watch is bang-on to what is shown on the Water Rower display... With my old Fenix 3, there was always a few strokes per minute less than shown... This makes me feel much more confident with the outdoor rowing when I like to set stroke rate alerts to keep me on target.
  • I'm using it for kayaking, but there are som limitations.

1: if you choose Rowing as your activity, you are not allowed to have Speed as a field, for some odd reason, Garmin doesnt think you need to be able to watch how fast you are going.
2: The other option is to choose Stand-Up Paddleboarding, I doesnt really feel that I fit in that catogory, but it's the best option. Garmin has with the Fenix 5, removed the usual Paddle option for some bizarre reason. So now it looks like i'm a SUP guy instead of a Marathon Race Kayak kind of guy.

    :/
  • More than 20 hours on the SUP with the watch, never rebooted or crashed. On the last 10km tour it said it took only 300kcal, thats a bit odd.
  • I'm primarily using the Running App for kayaking now although I have SUP setup as well if I want to wear the watch on my wrist to get stroke metrics. That way I get all the records etc associated with running and it gives me VO2 max, etc...

I have thought of that aswell, since I never go running, so it might be a better way to use the running session.

Will take a look at the DIY field, might add some good fields :)

With the launch of the Quatix 5, the marketing literature stated that it would support kayaking. This got me all excited, but when I questioned them about it, the response was as follows:

The write-up for the Quatix 5 is incorrect, thank you for letting us know about it.
Will get a hold of marketing to let them know this information is incorrect.
The testing of an app, such as you are requesting, has not been implemented, but has been in testing and development stages at various times.
This might be the reason for the mistake in the write-up.
Unfortunately at this time, I cannot say when and if it will be implemented.

    :(

It is the same on the fenix 3. I've never noticed that before. Garmin assumes you will always use pace. Pace is interesting but so is speed, and on the Olympics and championships, the actual speed in km/h is usually displayed on the TV. You may be able to use https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/d...a-9b8485d2fc80 to display speed if needed. I might give it a try. I will probably have to calculate speed from distance and time as the Speed field is not exposed.
