Smart Notification in Sport Mode

Hello,
this is my first Fenix and i'm surprised to see that smart notifications in sport mode (running, cycling, ...) isn't activated until Garmin Connect is opened on the smartphone.

When i'm in watch mode, smartnotifications are active even if garmin connect is off.
If i am in sport mode, there is no notifications until garmin connect is on

Is it normal and similar on Fenix 3 watches ?

As stated in the manual.

Hold MENU.
Select Settings > Phone > Smart Notifications > Status > On.
Select During Activity.
Select a notification preference.
Select a sound preference.
Select Watch Mode.
Select a notification preference.
Select a sound preference.
Select Timeout.
Select the amount of time the alert for a new notification appears on the screen.

Hi,
I am only seeing smart notifications on Watch mode, but not in activity mode.
I followed the instructions as stated, but still I don't get any smart notifications while in activity (MTB).
