No drill log during planned swim workout

While swimming with a pre-planned workout from GC today I noticed that there seems to be no possibility to log a drill interval with the watch. I can see the drill log screen when I select the Indoor Swimming activity, but this screen is not visible anymore as soon as I select and start my planned workout from GC.

Is there a way to pre-select a drill interval in GC in a way that it automatically adds the distance without recording it during the workout or do I just have to live with a shorter distance than I actually swam when doing a planned workout?
  • Drill log does work with a pre-planned swim workout. You need to plan the drill into the workout (under "Select a stroke", choose "Drill"). In the pool, the watch will queue you to do the drill, with the distance, when you get to that step in the workout. You don't need to navigate to the drill page, just press Lap to start the next step or wait for the watch to count you in (if the preceding step is a timed rest). Do the drill for the distance you prescribed. At the end of the drill, press Lap as usual. You won't be asked to confirm the drill distance, the watch assume you did what you set out to do.

Thanks, I wasn't aware that there was actually a drill stroke in GC (even changed the language to confirm just now). They translated it to german to something along the lines of "training stroke", so it didn't click for me.

Were you ever able to get this working? I recently decided to try a planned workout instead of just memorizing it and using the drill log on the watch. I have drill selected under stroke and the appropriate distance but when I do the workout on the watch it doesn't record distance for any of the drills that don't involve strokes (kick drills, etc). Any suggestions to get this working?
  • Sorry for the delayed answer.
Yes, it works perfectly for me. As far as I know the watch should automatically add the distance you programmed into your training, regardless if it has detected a single stroke or not, meaning you could leave the watch at the side of the pool, start your drill, come back and as soon as you enter the next step in your training program it should add the distance you swam (as long as it is planned correctly on garmin connect).

Just wanted to update in case anyone else experiences this issue. I think I figured out what the problem was. I previously sent workouts to my watch from the IOS app, which for now is not working for sending workouts anyway, so I tried using Garmin Express and if I sync a swim workout that way it works fine. Hopefully when Garmin releases the fix for the workouts not being able to be sent from iOS it will include a fix for this.

This doesn’t work for me either. I can send the workout fine from GC on iOS. But the drills doesn’t records.
  • I have the same problem. The drills aren't recorded...
  • For those of you for whom the drills are recorded, are you using the Lap button to end your drill intervals (as opposed to Start/Strop)? Start/Stop is really only intended to be used at the beginning and very end of your activity. Use the Lap button to switch between swim intervals and rests.

For those that just posted with this issue it seems to be a problem with how workouts are sent from the mobile app. If I send a swim workout from the mobile app it will have the intervals but will not display what stroke you have designated for that interval or if it's a drill. And I am definitely using the correct button. I always use Lap unless I'm actually ending the workout. However, if I send the workout using the USB cable and Garmin Express on my Mac it works just fine.

I just tried the Garmin Express route, it didn’t work. Maybe I’m doing something wrong. I just have this test workout with one fixed time repetition. I start the workout, press lap, then wait for the second repetition to start and press lap again when it’s done. No distance gets recorded.
