The display is way too dark. In direct sun light, its great, turn away from the sun, in the shade or inside, it is dreadful, I can not even read smaller data at all.
I hate to ask the somewhat obvious, but have you used the backlight button at the top left? Outdoors, when not in the sunlight, you may need to use the light. The display is designed to be nice and visible in direct sunlight, in contrast with the typical smartphone display.

Haha, I thought the same until I stumbled across the backlight setting. Upped it to 50%. 100 times better. Why they default to only 20% is beyond me, but i I presume its to conserve battery.

I have been using 10% on the Fenix 3 and the only reason that it is 20% on the Fenix 5 is because I have not bothered to change it.
I guess it depends on preference and Garmins research showed that 20% is the prefered for most?
