Turn-by-turn directions

Under what circumstances, if any, will the 5X give turn-by-turn directions? So far I've tried the following:
  • Round-trip course: The watch vibrates at an upcoming turn and shows the map. The watch does not give street names for the upcoming turn, even though that information is available when you're previewing a generated route on the watch.
  • A Garmin Connect Course: I created a course on GC (uploaded via Garmin Express). When following the course on the 5X, the watch provided no indication about upcoming turns. I had to set the watch to the map screen and keep looking at the map. To make matters more difficult, the screen kept resetting to the distance/pace screen. When looking at the course creator on GC, I don't see a way to manually add turn indicators.

What are the other options for getting turn-by-turn directions on the 5X?

I don't have answers for your issues, I'm curious to see what others have to say on the TBT direction pop ups but I did read on another thread that the screen reverting back to the pace/distance first screen may be because you have auto incline turned on in your navigation & maps & apps menus.
I have since turned mine off but have yet to do an app yet with it. Whe I walked with my dog yesterday, I had auto incline on and mine kept reverting back to the first screen but I figured it was due to maybe maps requiring more battery so it times out, like a backlight? That's what I thought anyways but when I read about the auto incline, maybe that was it.
    So try that maybe??

Yes, I did have auto climb turned on. I've since turned it off (I didn't really find it useful for running - but maybe others have suggestions for how to make it more useful?). I'll see if that fixes the screen reverting issue. Still interested in answers on the turn-by-turn issue...
  • The whole point of auto climb is that you can have the watch automatically change the data screen to something more "climb appropriate" with relevant climbing data fields when you start going up. It then automatically switches back when you stop climbing.

I use it for MTB to know the grade I'm on, my heart rate while climbing, cadence, etc. If you don't find it useful turn it off.
  • I have tried to use "courses" but on all occasions they have not given me any type of alert be it a vibration or turn by turn directions.

The courses are from GC and also RidewithGPS - all of which work on my Garmin Edge 1000.

Garmin - please can you assist with this issue.

If you're looking for help directly from Garmin, you should email support. Garmin rarely visits these forums; they're pretty much a user-based support group.

I've been arguing with Garmin support that this is a bug. Their last suggestion was that I should buy the TOPO 24k maps because the preloaded cycle map only provides turn-by-turn for Cycling activities (sigh).

You will get turn-by-turn directions if you navigate to a saved location. You may need to fiddle with the Routing setting in the application you are using.

I have bought the 24k maps for my region but have yet to make a route. I'll have to try doing one and see if it gives me turn by turn or not. I haven't tried it since its been too rainy to run my usual outdoor route. But I'll do it here in about 30 minutes and then save it as a course. See what happens for my am run.

Does that mean if you set the routing type to cycling instead of pedestrian, even with the included maps, you'd get TbT directions? I'm not sure I'd understand why one map would give you turn-by-turn and one wouldn't. Could downloading an OSM map work?

Does that include routing to a PoI or routing back to start (but not using TracBack)?

    Road pemex

Well turning the auto incline to off did allow me to keep the map screen up the whole run.
    Yay!

I have the 24k topo for my area(north central USA) and on the Garmin website, it says mine has turn by turn directions but the 100k topos do NOT. So I assume that is why you aren't getting the TBT natively with the pre installed maps. They are the 100k topo variety, which Garmin sells regionally for $59 each(you get these all pretty much world wide, free, with the watch, and chose which ones to download when you first sync).
100k topos just have searchable POIs & terrain contours.

I bought the 24k before my watch even got here. I have a rural gravel riding bike event that is out in BFE Iowa where even cell service is spotty. I needed reliable maps. Ones that had more info. Which is why I upgraded.

And yes, it does say cycling has TBT directions, they are in the store for $49 but obviously you got them with your watch already. So you could set a custom activity that has "cycling" maps & setting but with your pedestrian info screens. So cheat it, if you will.

It appears the factory default for running turns off the 100k map and turns on US Cycling map. As @NAKEDBABYTOES points out, the US Cycling Map offers TbT routing, so in theory one should not need to get the 24k map in order to get TbT directions on the 5X. So, perhaps the issue is in routing settings. There are two settings in particular that seem like they might be relevant:
    • Activity: By default the activity is set to "Pedestrian." Perhaps changing this to cycling will force TbT directions?
    • Courses: By default the 5X is set to "Follow Course," which according to the manual "creates a basic course." The other option is "Use the Map" which "calculates a course using routable maps, and recalculate[s] the route if you stray from the course." The use of routable maps in that option sounds promising, although it is unclear to me whether this applies only to courses created on the watch vs courses downloaded from GC.

The questions that I have are the following:
    • Is the use of the US Cycling map sufficient in a well-mapped, semi-ubran area for getting TbT directions for running? (I'm 99% sure the answer is yes given that the 5X can do TbT out of the box when you select "Round Trip Course").
    • Can I get TbT directions for running by selecting "Use the Map" instead of "Follow Course" and keep the activity mode in "Pedestrian" (hopefully allowing routes against traffic on one-way streets).
    • Do I need to switch the activity to "Cycling" in order to get TbT directions?

If I have time tomorrow, I'll try to create a short 1 mile course on GC. I will then try running that course repeatedly on the 5X in the following modes:
    • Activity: Pedestrian, Courses: Follow Course
    • Activity: Pedestrian, Courses: Use the Map
    • Activity: Cycling, Courses: Use the Map
    • Activity: Cycling, Courses: Use the Map

I'll see whether I can get the 5X to give me TbT on any of those options. If the answer is no, the problem might be a faulty assumption that it is possible to get TbT directions on a course created and downloaded from GC.
