Fenix 5 and BSXInsight XM2

Just tried my first run today with the XM2. The device paired up on the Fenix 5 straight away and I got two new items I could add to the running data screen.
Muscle o2 saturation and Total Hemoglobin. When I was running I saw the percentage constantly changing (creeping slightly up)... while the Hemoglobin number was pretty static.

Now the question. Where is this data hidden in garmin connect ?.. I can't find it in the mobile app or the web site..

Any thoughts ?
  • I'll connect mine and see if I can find the data on my next run.

As an aside you SMO2% rose during your run? That's a bit odd.

    Thanks for checking..

Oh my run was Aerobic only.... starting easy after vacation.... I noticed the numbers were quite poor... down to 75% for the first 12-13 minutes.. then steady 79-80%.. Jumped to 84% when I stopped.
So from that I gather I should warm up for 12-13 minutes before I do any speed work... and if I rest all the time my smo2 is at it's peak :)

I added graph from the device
  • OK checked it quickly with an activity and SMO2% and ThB do not show up in Garmin Connect or Garmin Connect Mobile, but the data is in the FIT file and does show up in SportTracks.

I wonder if Garmin has any strategy around this... if they can't be bothered displaying the data anywhere... I guess it's safe to say they don't use it to calculate lactate threshold either.

What's your percentage like btw ? I see on the BSX website one example starts with 90% smo2...
  • I am no where near 90%. Typically I start in mid to low 70s% and then I have worked out a warmup for running that mixes walking with fast paced strides (down to about 6 min / mile pace) and this results in a starting SMO2% higher than my initial point and puts me in mid to high 70s%. Depending on the workout I have gone as low as mid 50s%, but more typical is to get in to high 60s%.

I think it is more important to look at the trends you have and where exhaustion falls for a workout, or an interval, than to compare across people as I have a high degree of variability between workouts.

Since I started using Stryd Power Meter I use the Insight a lot less, and have only recently used it during Critical Running Power Tests to gauge if I am pushing hard enough during the test. The other part that still bothers me with the BSX is that you have to initiate the workout from your phone first, which is a PITA.

Yikes.. a small world.. I just had a look at the Stryd 2.0 :)

How does it help you ?.. from what I can gather it doesn't integrate well with the Fenix 5 ?
  • BSX told me the other day there is no way to record this info to the FIT file.

    Hello Paul,
That is a question for Garmin. Our team is not restricting Garmin from recording the data they are taking in. Wahoo has had this functioning for over a year. It may help to have a friendly email sent to Garmin to ask them when they will allow recording of SmO2 and tHb on their device. They already pick up SmO2 and tHb native now they just need to record it.
    Best regards,

So when is the app going to be updated to work with the Garmin 935? That watch should allow recording of the data…….

    Hi Paul,
Yes, you are correct. You will first need to connect your BSXinsight to your mobile app and then you can pair it with your Garmin watch.
    Happy training,

Hi Wayne, the problem isn’t recording it is actually displaying values. I have the new Garmin 935 model which has an SMO2 channel and it’s all paired up, but shows no values on the watch when connected to the sensor.
Do I have to run the iphone app at the same time to get the values to work or something?

    Hello Paul,
Thank you for writing to me at BSX Technologies! I am happy to help you with your questions. At this time Garmin does not record the data from your BSXinsight. With future updates this may change.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
    Cheers,

How to get data onto the watch? I have paired the sensor to the 935 and set up the data screen but no values are being shown....

BSX is full of it, you can record it on the fit file, these guys don't know there they say it can not be done.just download the app from moxy, it work with bsx and the data get recorded, BSX are just scammers.
  • BSX definitely dragged their feet in updating their app to record the data, however, once the Fenix5/FR935 was released, there was no longer a need as these watches natively supported the MO2 channel. Why hasn't Garmin enabled recording of this data as it no longer requires a CIQ as a workaround????
  • Is there a way to view or extract the SMO2/tHB data in the FIT files somehow? I know its there as it shows in SportTracks but it isn't visible in the FitFileRepairTool I use......
