BaseCamp not able to export to Fenix 5 Device

One of the great features of BaseCamp was to export GPX courses to the Fenix 3 so I could explore new courses.
Upgrading to the Fenix 5 and it appears that this is no longer possible.
Anyone have any success with Transferring from BaseCamp to Fenix 5?
And bright ideas how to do this?
  • I have done this to my 5X from Windows. Someone else reported having problems with basecamp on mac, but was able to transfer the gpx file by exporting from basecamp and manually copying to /Garmin/NewFiles on the watch instead.
  • As someone new to the Fenix series, could you explain what functionality basecamp offers that creating a course in garmin connect does not?

This just happened to me this morning, I planned a route and could not upload it to the fenix 5. I had to go back to GC to plan the route that way.

You can purchase detailed maps from garmin and use them for backcountry hiking. Google is fine if you stick to roads or very common trails in populated areas, but for serious backcountry hiking in the wilderness you need trail and elevation detail not avail on Garmin Connect (or google for that matter).

Thanks. Is there a way to set waypoints in either garmin connect or basecamp? I have yet to understand how that functionality works when I'm navigating with the watch.

You can create waypoints very easily in Basecamp and you can send them to the device (or in my case copy manually since there seems to be a bug using basecamp on mac). Waypoints show up on the fenix as "saved locations." You can navigate to them point to point from anywhere while in the Navigation screen. It would be great if they would show up on course but I haven't figured out if that is possible. But you can get to them from the Navigation menu (left middle button during activity).

That's interesting they come in as saved locations. From looking at the navigation data fields it looks like there is some kind of way pointing functionality. As in there are fields that show you what the next waypoint is. I wonder how to create these waypoints then?

Are there turn by turn directions while navigating from a course created in Garmin connect?

I have a Mac! I hope that this is fixed relatively quickly

The beauty of BaseCamp is that you find thousands of of courses for cycling or hiking from other resources on-line and then import the GP file to transfer as a course to your watch.

Great way to find a new route to explore and be ready to go within a few minutes.
  • With windows no problem, too.

Only the elevation data isn't visible on the watch for courses. If I transfer the course with basecamp into a track and send it to the watch, the elevation data (elevation plot)is visible on my 5x. Seems to be a problem courses:elevation data...
  • I have the same problem with my Fenix 5/BaseCamp for Mac.

I have also another problem (the same as with my Femin 3HR), almost every time I connect and then disconnect (after unmount it) it the watch freezes and I have to soft reset it. Anyone else?
