Is there activity for sauna?

Hi,

Is there any sauna activity template/idea? Do you think 5X would survive sauna for 15-20 min? If you created custom one which fields are you using?

Thanks

No, I am not joking. I want very basic activity which obviously doesn't track distance or movement, but measures the time and logs my heart rate along with some alerts like time alert and alert in case heart rate goes into high zone and it would be nice to use temperature and calculate proper lost calories. I don't think anything like this exists, but I was hopping there is very basic/generic activity which just logs heart rate and calculate calories and I can use as starting point. I go to sauna pretty often and it would be very interesting to see any heart rate trends.
  • Just a word of warning:

Conditions in a typical sauna often exceed maximum allowable operating temperature for the F5 (or any other garmin, for that matter) by a large margin. Visiting sauna on a regular basis while wearing the watch may easily kill it. Rubber elements and glue degrade pretty quickly in high temperatures.
  • I have been wearing my F3 regularly to sauna without any issues. Using simple countdown set for 15min.

I am assuming that the watch temperature should not go extremely high, because the body is still at about 100F temperature and would work as cooling for the watch. I was wearing my Casio ProTrek watch to the sauna for few years and never noticed any problems with waterproofing and anything else. Otherwise what is the point of having fitness activity tracker if you can't take it into the sauna.
  • Is it possible that your watch survives multiple sauna sessions? Sure. What is the risk of damaging the watch by exposing it to high temperatures? I don't know, slim maybe. But I think there is a reason why Garmin puts the maximum operating temperature at 50C. Don't be surprised if your device fails eventually, possibly voiding your warranty.

There are many environments that you shouldn't (according to manufacturer) be taking your garmin into. Sauna is not the only one.

Anyway it's your device and your money. You are free to do with it anything you want. I just wanted to be helpful in warning you in case you missed the specs in the manual.

Thank you tmk2. I appreciate your warning.
  • I have an app that displays the reading from a Tempe, in an app that looks like a watch face, so you can run it when you're just out doing yard work, etc, and see the ambient temperature. A user suggested I kind of adapt it for a sauna.

Others have expressed concern about the temperatures in a sauna for a watch, but I'll put in the humidity part too. With a tempe, I don't think it's as sealed as the watch, so the humidity part would be a real concern, and the fact that it wouldn't be as moderated by skin temp could also push it beyond the temperature ratings, but it seems if you wanted to record in a sauna, having something like a tempe to get the ambient temp would be useful. (I've got a bowling app (unpublished!) where you can attach the tempe to your "adult beverage", and it will warn you if it's getting warm though! :) )

Hottest sauna baths have very low humidity, otherwise temperatures reaching 100C would be dangerous to a human. Where I live, in a typical sauna session the temperature usually stays in the range 70-100C. This is well over the reporting capability of a tempe sensor, which - according to specs - goes up to 60C. Besides, tempe is somewhat inert, meaning that it takes time to update its reading when temperature changes suddenly (like when entering a sauna from a much colder room), so when the reading reaches the real ambient temperature, it is usually time to get out of the sauna anyway.

you put the tempe inside your beer? bah :)
