Forum Structure

Posting it here because I can't find anywhere better...

With different Garmin devices starting to share the same hardware and software (and presumably dev teams), the structure of these forums doesn't really seem the best any more.

Questions and answers about the fenix 5 'family' are now split over 3 different sub-forums: f5/f5S, f5X and FR935. I know a few of the posts are going to be device-specific, but I'd say the majority will relate to core functionality so it's pretty inefficient having the 3 different threads. I guess this started with the f3HR having its own sub-forum rather than using the f3's, but I think we're going to see more and more shared technology in Garmin devices in the future (fenix 5 software in an Edge - why not?) so at some point I think Garmin are going to need to re-format these forums based on the internals rather than the marketing brackets.

I would "like" this if I could, since I don't have a whole lot more to offer and it's not exactly a hot-button issue.

I do agree, though. There are many different forums we need to browse to in order to find info potentially relevant to our devices that we might miss something that is important to us. For example, the 5X forum seems to have a more active 2.40 bugs thread than the 5/5S forum, yet not all of it is about maps.

I'm not sure what the solution is, though, since combining 5/5S/5X/935 into one forum could get pretty noisy. But keeping the 5X in with the 5/5S seems to make sense to me.

    But eh...
  • When the F5/F5S and F5X forums were first added the same question came up and I speculated on here that it might be so that mapping related discussions about the 5X wouldn't clog up/get lost in the generic F5 forum which was later confirmed by a mod.

Now while the 935 is an F5 in a plastic case it might be that as this generation of watches are developed there might be outdoorsy features added to the Fenix watches that the 935 doesn't get, and the 935 might get more sporty features the the Fenix series doesn't.

    Just guessing though.
  • Agree. Actually started a similar thread over a year ago regarding Fenix 3 after the F3HR was added but a separate forum. Pain to go back and forth and search the two forums when 95% of the watch is the same. But no surprise, we just don't have the discipline to keep each forum focused on just what is unique. It could be fine if everyone only posted to threads related to mapping in the 5X forum and all other topics in the "common" forum (or only OHRM topics in the F3HR forum and all the rest in the F3 forum) but reality is that just won't happen.
  • Totally agree, there could definitely be some consolidation. I have a FR 230, and never really understood why the 230 and 235 had their own forums.
