Navigation ?'s / "Continue to next waypoint"?

So as I've mentioned before, im coming from a Suunto and still learning Garmin. I did a test today down my road just to get used to the navigational features. I see there are a few fields like "dist to final " and "dist to next wpt". Which seem great. I put in a course with a few waypoints but for some reason it just grabs the waypoint I tell it to go to. So then I tried to just "go to " the next waypoint in front of me. That worked and even when i was arriving it said" Arriving at waypoint". But it just stopped there. It didnt tell me to "continue to waypoint 2"
How do I accomplish this. Basically I just want to put in a gpx file of say 5 miles or whatever it may be, have as many waypoints as I want and for it to tell me when Im arriving at each and to continue to the next one automatically.
  • You have to make a "course" out of the waypoints so that the watch knows the order of travel which would be kind of a "string" and can be done on the watch

If you make a course on Garmin Connect it will follow all the curves and such

Can you make waypoints no Garmin Connect? I didnt see a way to so I made a course in Basecamp
  • I can not say how well basecamp works with the F5X even with them claiming basecamp compatibly and F5x owner may be more helpful

It was not the best solution for the F3 series other then sending waypoints

The TCX and FIT formats contain time stamps and other information such as elevation which allows the watch to follow a course without confusion
  • Ok I have tried like 5 different sites between, Garmin Connect, Suunto, Strava, Ridewithgps, Gaia GPS, and the basecamp app but nothing will import a GPX route with the waypoints and the elevation point. This is ridiculous. For a navigationa company and a navigational watch, there is no reason why it should be this difficult. I am very technically inclined, I cant image a non tech person to figure this out.
  • To start as a former Ambit 3 peak owner the Garmins have completely different requirements to make a course BUT reward you with far more ways to make a course with or without GARMIN TOOLS as on the Ambit you use Movescount or Movescount

To start simple the circles can be Nugged around and will fill the distance to next data field

    " />">

Many maps do NOT HAVE elevation data and on GC I find the open street map to give the best result

    " />">

You also have to configure the 4 possible navigation data field pages to show the information you want

There is a BIG thread in the F3 forum about a Fenix 3 following a course which goes into the hows But the watch will follow a course it just takes a wiliness to do things the Garmin F series way

Thanks for that. ill keep poking away at it
  • Ok so I managed to get the course into the watch with waypoints and elevation data. I searched around and found the JaVaWa toolkit. So I did another test course with 4 waypoints, loaded it up on the watch but still doesnt read the waypoints in the course. It shows htem on the map, but when I go to my data fields with the "next waypoint" distance to next" "wpt next"etc, nothing is there. I still cant get the waypoints to be embedded into the file. They are seperate. I can go to my "saved locations" and select one of them but then i lose the course.
  • Send a bug report to the fenix5 beta fw team;)
  • Ciao.. Ho il tuo stesso problema con il fenix 6x. Creo un percorso con basecamp con waypoint. Importo sul Fenix 6x..vedo sia il percorso che waypoint.. Ma sul quadrante waypoint successivo nulla. CryCry
