fenix 5, WiFi

Got my fenix 5 sapphire today and and I see that Garmin Connect identifies the device as "fenix 5, WiFi" (I presume non-sapphire models are identified as just "fenix 5'). I wonder if this is Garmin's way of trying to make us feel better about spending the extra $100.00.
  • Fair enough I guess. Personally I always have my iPhone with me and bluetooth on as I listen to music on it. So the moment I stop the activity e.g. after a bike ride it syncs to GC and then to Strava within a few seconds, long before I get home. I guess everyone's situation is different....

Exactly...not everyone suffers from the OCD that I have regarding my phone's battery conservation.
I have no open apps or bluetooth or unnecessary services running when not needing them. :p
  • Question regarding the F5's WiFi sync (or rather connection) speed... how quickly does it actually connect to your WiFi network when in range & start the sync process? I've found my F3 to be completely random in this regard. Sometimes it has already connected & synced in the time in takes me to walk up my driveway to my house, other times I could be sitting around at home for 30-60 minutes and it still hasn't started the sync process (and my phone is either off or out of range). Note that my WiFi signal strength/coverage is fantastic & I get a usable signal from the other side of the street, so that is not an issue.

Is there any improvement with the F5?

    Thanks.

This is the typical experience I also have with the 920xt.
If battery power is too low, I think 10% and below, it won't automatically sync with wifi.
I cannot speak for the f5 unfortunately and am also interested to know if there is any improvement.

    Thanks HermoT,

Can i know when you said sync with wifi, does it sync with all the wifi that you have saved (ie just like how your iPhone auto connects to strongest wifi signal when it detcts one) ?

Or it connects to only 1 wifi signal that is from your house ?

What I meant is, can it auto sync with the wifi signal from your house when you are at home and sync to the wifi signal from your office when you are in office ?

When we turn on the Bluetooth, which one takes precedence, the wifi or Bluetooth?

    Thanks

The nice thing about wifi is that you arrive home, all sweating and panting, but your watch automatically syncs your latest activity. No need to fumble with your phone because bluetooth is off, or the GCM app isn't running.

And once you have showered and grabbed a beer, you will find that it has already synced across to all your other accounts like Strava and Training Peaks and Runkeeper.

My wifi range is big enough and I have often found it has already synced the activity while running around the block on my cool down lap.

    Just so efficient.

I've been spoilt with my 920xt wifi capability. :D

It will sync with the first one it succeeds to upload to or download from. If one fails, it will definitely try the other.
And yes it will based on this, sync to your office wifi when at office, and on home wifi when home.

I think Bluetooth takes precedence as syncing in Garmin Connect Mobile happens quite frequently.
  • Is there an option to turn auto sync on?

Does it send watch faces by Wi-Fi too?

Can it store more than one connection?Looks like I always need a computer to setup a new wifi, that's very impractical.
  • How do I setup Garmin Express to send stuff by WIFI instead of cable?
  • for longer runs or races it'll take so much longer to upload via bluetooth versus a wifi or USB sync.

Looking in the archives the BT transfer rate is something in the order of 2 minutes per hour of activity whereas WiFi seems to be done in a few seconds.

WiFi (when it works) therefore makes a lot of sense if you're short of time between activities and you need to check how you did, Especially if it is a long activity with multiple sensors e.g. HR, speed, cadence, and power meter, combined with and 1s recording.

Does wifi do anything else than uploading activities ? Like updating software to garmin device ? Or is express still the only solution ?
