First Impressions

I don't see a basic first impressions topic. Kind of broken up into different threads. I originally posted this in "Has it shipped yet ..." but I'll try this new thread.

Got my 5x, so now I have something substantive to talk about. I got it from Holabird sports, ordered online at 8pm, it shipped the next day.

Like others have said, the charging cable is only 2 feet long. Won't reach from an outlet to my night stand. After paying $700, it's shameful for Garmin to save 10 cents on a USB cable. I've got an extender which I'll have to remember to take on trips, because charging in a hotel room will likely result in it hanging from the wall behind the bed or something.

Haven't done anything with it yet. Garmin Connect on my Android phone seems to be stuck in sync. It paired ok. Shows 80% charge out of the box. I'm going to charge to 100% before using it.

I like the feel of the button press much better on this than the F3. F3 had kind of a cheap, crunchy feel.

I have a sapphire 3x. There have already been pictures posted, but if anyone wants to see something in particular I'll try to oblige.

And now I see the really long sync was due to a software update being pushed.

Update:

Turned on GPS outdoors for a few minutes, then went for a quick walk. Forgot to set to 1 second recording, but except for that the tracking was better than my F3.

The OHR is working fine for me. Light skin, not much hair on my wrist.

Doesn't seem to be a button shortcut for Bluetooth.

None of the digital watch face configurations include a colon between hours and minutes, or I just haven't found it.

Why are you plugging it into a wall-socket? Are you aware that you should be using a maximum amplitude of 500ma (milli-amps) to charge the watch? If you plug it into a normal android/iphone USB plug which outputs 1Amp (1000ma) to 2A (2000ma) then you could cause the battery to charge too fast and break the watch.

You would need to use a plug transformer that was 500ma max output to whatever USB cable [and therefore device] that is connected.

My understanding is that amps for charging is determined by the output device. i.e. the watch will only pull as much as it can use up to whatever the input can give, so this should never be a problem.

    Utter nonsense.

Standard USB power is 500ma *maximum.* To get higher output you must either present a short on the data pins (which the watch DOES not do) or negotiate one of the faster rates via proprietary means (e.g. Quick Charge, etc.)

If you plug it into a "phone" USB charger you will get.... no more than 500ma. In fact you'll get less since the watch needs far less to actually charge.

I have a USB inline power monitor and know exactly[/b] how these interfaces both are supposed to behave and, in the case of the Fenix series, do behave.[/i]

Where do you know about this... I mean max 500mAh ?
  • Actuality the smart part of the current draw is part of the watch or phone or whatever to KEEP THE BATTERY form overheating during a charge

The watch charges at 5Vdc, which is what the USB standard is. The amount of current that flows will depend on the load, and not the capacity of the charger, provided the load doesn't demand more than the charger can provide. It's safe to use a charger of any current rating as long as it's 5Vdc.

Like others have mentioned, there are new fast USB chargers that can provide higher voltage, and that *would* be a problem, but they'll only provide more than 5V if the attached device indicates it can accept it.

Long press the light button. The phone symbol is for Bluetooth.

    Where did you bought

Hi... just ask to know how to reach my own one....
May you tell us where did you bought and have not seen 3-5weeks estimates?
  • Sure, I got it from holabirdsports.com. Shipped the day after I ordered. I don't know what their stock situation is now, though.
