Optical Heart Rate

Hi All,

Upgrading to the Fenix 5 from the 3. I don't have much experience with the optical heart rate, but plan to use the strap for most runs, etc. However I like the idea of daily tracking of heart rate.

Any thoughts on how tight the strap has to be for the results to get good results?

Thanks!

I was asking the same a few days back, the idea is to wear it above the wrist bones and tight but no too. Actually I wear it tight-to-loos while not in activity and tight enough but not to be uncomfortable when I need oHR to work in activity. Also I have trimmed my hear under the sensors and it is much better.

I prefer not too tight. I can put a finger in the band. Others prefer a more tighter fastening.

But my heart rate is quite ok. My run today was nearly spot on OHR vs HRM strap. I only lost the connection as I sprinted up a road bridge.
I use the AHR datafield for logging the OHR-rate simultaneously with a HRM strap. With a certain sporttracks plugin I can overlay both curves directly after import.
At about 35min I lost the connection for a short time:

Cool. What sportstracks plugin? Is it an online plug in.

I didn't see AHR datafield. Maybe I missed it, is that what the app is called?

No, its for sporttracks 3.0. I'm a little oldschool and prefer my data on my computer.

But try the AHR datafield which can be found here:
    https://apps.garmin.com/de-DE/apps/88ce4547-7d84-4289-b2c7-3e15ca00185f

With this datafield you can log your OHR data combined with an ANT-device HR data in one single Fit file. In Garmin connect you can see both tracks simultaneoulsy. In Sporttracks you have to use a certain plugin for importing these special fitfiles. The plugin I used in the sample above is the "overlay" plugin with which you can overlay two different activities. Very usable if you want to compare an old race with a newer one, e.g., etc.pp....
  • The manual say snug but comfortable and should not move. For me, to getting it working best you get a slight imprint on the skin when taking it off.
