First impressions: HR works... oddly. Plus gesture based backlight needs work

Recorded a workout on the 5X with the wrist HR while my 705 recorded my chest strap. The results over the 1:40:00 workout were very close:

HR Avg: strap: 161 5X: 162
HR Max: strap: 171 5X: 173

No complaints there.

What's odd is when a watch face is used that displays HR (outside of an activity). It seems that live HR isn't possible as the number displayed bears no relation to the current bpm, which makes it kind of useless for me.
I have also had the HR display field on the watch face disappear completely. Removing the face and adding it again sometimes fixed it. Another time, it just reappeared on its own.

Enabling gestures on the backlight didn't work at all yesterday, began working this morning and stopped again after noon. I tried setting it to 24 hour and military time to confirm that it didn't somehow think it was the middle of the night. Interestingly, raising and twisting my wrist does cause the second hand on 3rd party watch faces to reappear even when the backlight doesn't get triggered.

It can take a fairly strong movement to trigger gestures. I'd like it to be more sensitive or, better yet, adjustable. The screen looks fine outside but is really dim inside, hence the need for the backlight.

Battery life has been exceptional. 1% used while sleeping even with 1 sec HR recording. I'd trade battery life for a better screen and live updating on watch faces. If that can be enabled and gestures fixed, I'd be more content, though I do wish a brighter screen was possible. Compared to other smart watches, battery is great, screen is poor and the bugs so far fairly minor.
  • Third party watch faces have limitations because they need to be low power. I believe for heart rate they use a cached value. If you want live data then I suggest looking at the HR widget.

On gesture backlight I can think of a couple of things that might cause issues. Firstly it is disabled when do not disturb is set. Check that is off. Also sleep time sets DnD so check that is set correctly as well. Lastly check the right wrist is set in user settings

  • You were right about DnD. It was on and turning it off fixed the backlight issue. Thank you!

The heartrate widget is great except it reverts to the watch face after a minute or so. It wouldn't surprise me if there was a setting to change it, but I haven't found it yet.

  • That's how widgets work, they too are low power so can only be on screen for a short time. If you want heart on screen for longer you can always start an activity and make sure HR is one of the fields shown.

Although I could do without the strict limitations imposed for ultra low power consumption, I have to say that I'm enjoying the watch more and more everyday.

I love that I can easily control the audio on my phone while riding on rollers (trying to wrest the phone from the back pocket of my jersey was such a pain I usually wouldn't bother). Thanks to wifi I can turn off bluetooth (to save my phone's battery) and still get updated weather with one button press.

Now that the backlight works effortlessly, I'm quite pleased with the screen.

Really the only significant improvement I can think of at the moment would be to have a rotating bezel instead of, or in addition to, the Up/Down buttons. Well, that and relaxing some of the restrictions on accessing real time sensor data.
  • Gesture

My gesture to turn the backlight on stopped working last night, and the only way to get it back was to restart the watch.
  • Did you check your Do Not Disturb was not active?

  • Me? Yes. Checked everything. It was seemingly crashed. Has been working well since the restart.
