Strava Live Segments (syncing causes crash)

Hey all,

I'm opening a new thread as this seems to be a different issue than the GPX transfer freeze described in this thread:

https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?372020-fenix-5X-frozen-gt-Garmin-triangle

So here's the description of the Strava issue:

Everytime I try to sync my Strava Segments to the watch (no matter if I do it via Express/USB or GCM/Bluetooth) its screen freezes and it can only be turned off with a long power button press. When turned on again, it is stuck on the initial Garmin triangle screen. The only way to get it to work again is a hard reset (power, start and back button sequence).

Garmin support send me some segments as fit files that I copied directly to the Segments folder of the watch. I can access those on the watch without problems. Still everytime I try to sync my segments the "normal" way, the fenix crashes.

Here are the things I already tried:

- deleted all my segments on Strava
- dis- and reconnected my Garmin and Strava accounts
- un- and reinstalled Garmin Express

None of this helps.

Is anyone else having this issue or do Strava Segements work on you devices? (do a backup before trying ;-)
  • Hi,

One of the folks from Garmin reached out to you on the other thread. If I was you I'd work with him to resolve the issue.

    Hi,

I am in contact with them (see my post), but would really like to know if others are having the same issue as the beta team said they weren't able to reproduce it yet.
  • Just got another mail from Garmin support. They were able to reproduce the freeze with some segment fit files I sent them. They already have a solution which will also be included in the next firmware update.
  • That is good news.

I have something strange going on too. I just signed up for premium trial to test segments and was shocked to see that despite only having 9 segments starred, there were over 50 segments pending sync shown in Garmin connect. I cancelled most of these since they were not segments I wanted, but having now synced, I see the 9 that I have starred in the Segments directory on the watch, but I also have another 49 from the local area in there too! There are 58 fit files in the Segments directory.

Is this normal or is something up with my segments? There does not seem to be any way to check to see what segments are active on the watch. The only thing I can see to check is my starred segments in Strava of which I have only 9. I wonder if it is safe to simply delete files from the watch.

I tried running one of these segments briefly last night, but it did not get picked up. I did not have time to investigate and I notice that the timestamp on that segment fit file is dated late last night well after I was back home, so I am hoping that for some reason it was not on the watch at the time. I hope to play more tonight.

Has anyone else got any strange anomalies like this?

Strava automatically syncs the most popular segments in your area. This is nothing to worry about.

I can't tell for sure if it's safe to delete the segments fit files that you don't want to use, but I guess it is.

Do you have a fenix 5x aswell?
  • Great thanks, I'll not delete them then. Was just a bit alarmed when it had around 60 files to sync when I had only 6 starred at the time!

    Yes, I have a 5x.
  • There is no harm in deleting the Strava Live Segments from your device. Simply navigate to \Garmin\Segments and remove those .fit segments you no longer want. You may also consider looking in the \Garmin\NewFiles folder to see if any .fit segments are written there that correspond with those you do not want. Be sure to leave all .fit segments you do want. Deleting any of those will cause issues/confusion.
  • Although I have live segments setup and working now, I too am having some problems. It seems that not all segments seem to be picked up correctly by the watch. I can see all the files, my starred segments and the other local segments which Strava seems to choose for me in the Segments directory, but some do not get detected when I run.

I have found you can list them on the watch from the menus in: Run Settings->Training->Strava Live Segments, and again they do not all show segments and some appear corrupted. Here are the screenshots of what I see when I scroll through 3 items in the list:

I have 2 entries which show up corrupt when scrolling through the list, and what is more strange, is they only show in the middle, they appear/disappear from the list rather than scrolling up and down with the others. The 3 screenshots were the result of pressing down 3 times.

I do not know if this is the same problem which causes the crash reported in this thread, but there appears to be something going wrong here and so not all my segments work.

Does anyone else see similar problems or are do segments work 100% for some people? I hope Garmin can fix this. There are no strange characters in the names that I can see. Certainly nothing in the filenames.
  • I decided to do a factory reset since this looked somehow corrupt, and kept things to a minimum, i.e. only a couple of CIQ apps and after the segments re-synced, they all seem to show up fine without any sign of corruption. I'll see if the ones which did not work before work now.
  • Same thing for me when downloading Garmin Segment from Garmin Connect (from iPhone) --> factory reset
