Stupid Garmin tech support. They ensured me that F5 does not do Strava segments. Even Strava website says 735xt only. WTH? Nope, my GC segment tab only shows Garmin segments! Uhg
I think you were given duff information. If you take a look at this thread in the 5X forum you will see comments indicating the Garmin engineers are working on a Strava live segments problem and have it working themselves. And as Crispin indicates, some people have it working just fine.

On your segment tab, there should be an option, when you tap on the settings symbol, to switch from Garmin segments to Strava segments (like the picture below, except that is showing how I could opt to go back to Garmin segments).
Wow. I think I finally got it. I had to use Garmin Connect on my iphone to go to my segments and then chose Strava. It wouldnt let me do it on my PC. Now when I try to see segments on GC via PC, it just says "use Strava to look at your segments, you are using Live Segments". I think I got it now. My F5 is syncing and its taking a long time, so I presume its syncing all those segment FIT files. Thanks!!

Yep, first time I synch via bluetooth after selecting about 10 Strava segments it too bloody ages to synch. Look forward to seeing if they work on Saturday. :)
They were working fine for me on two runs over the weekend; including a in run notification that you are approaching a starred segment and a 'special' segment datafield screen when in Segment. Have you checked that segment alerts are on in the run app settings? Also worth checking the GARMIN/SEGMENTS folder on the watch when plugged in to a PC/Mac to check that the segment files have been sent to the watch.
Thanks for pointing out the obvious...it would probably make more sense to have that alert setting available in the "Strava Live Segments" section under "Training" though !
For some reason a boatload of segments got synched that are rather far away from my location (and that I haven't starred) while others are not there, will have to look into this.
EDIT 1 - so "popular segments" was checked in Strava for some reason, unchecked and will sync again. Had tried deleting on the watch but it was a slow process.
EDIT 2 - so that didn't remove the popular segments, looks like you need to remove them by hand ? I've also noticed that "race segments" by the people I follow on Strava got added automatically. They aren't from an actual "race" though, is there maybe a Strava option where you can "challenge" the people that follow you to a "segment race" of sorts ?
