Move alert - not working correctly

So I have the move alert on because i work at a desk all day.

But it does not seem to work correctly on my new fenix 5s.

Sometimes I get a move alert, but most of the time I don't.

This morning I got a move alert and after that I went for a 10 minute bike ride. But my red bar is still on the screen (with additional segments!).

I think this is a bug.

If this is your first Garmin with a move bar, there's a bit behind it that may not be clear at first (BTW, seems to be working on my f5 as it does on other Garmins I've used). The move alert is related, but you can turn that off, and still get a move bar. The move bar typically has 5 segments, the large one for 1hr, and 4 smaller ones for 15 minutes each (so all 5 is 2hr's or more)
  • You wont see anything until it's been an hour, and it's not that you haven't taken any steps in that hour, it's that you haven't taken enough steps.
  • The move bar will only get cleared by steps and not a ride. Jim will post the details no doubt (as I can't remember them) but if you do 200 or so steps it will clear a full move bar

Note I say steps - that's what it's all about. A bit of a thing with that too.. Garmin has what's basically a "10 or more" false step rejection (to NOT count steps if you're sitting at a desk and you're just moving your arm for example) Until the watch thinks you've done 10 steps, none will be counted, but when you hit 10, you get credit for those first 10. So if you take a bunch of 5 steps here, get coffee, 5 steps back type things, it may seem like you did 100 steps, but the watch doesn't think so.

You won't get the move bar at all during the time based on your configured sleep and wake times (I bit before sleep and a bit after wake), but other than that, it's very much of a "what have you done for me lately?" thing. You can run a marathon, get home and sit down and watch a movie for an hour, and get a move bar!

You get the first one if you dont do about 100 steps for the hour (with all 5 being about 200).
To clear all 5, you need to do about 200, with little or no stopping.

Jim, thank you very much for the extensive explanation!

Interesting... how do you get a move bar without a move alert? I would like to see a move bar without an alert, but I can't figure out how to set it that way. As far as I can see, if the move alert is off, there is no move bar.
If you would be kind enough to enlighten me I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

On the watch itself, go to "Settings>Activity Tracking" and turn off the move alert. You may need to make the change in Garmin Connect too so it doesn't turn back on. You can also turn off Goal alerts (you meet your daily step goal) in the same place

Thanks you for the help. I appreciate it.
I do have it set that way, but when the move alert is turned off, I don't get an option on the digital face to show steps bar or move alert bar on the watch face itself (built in of course). Probably user error, and I'm not sure if I'm explaining it properly. I'm aware you can change the data displayed, etc, but the option doesn't come up. I'll mess around a little more and see what happens.
