Fenix 5 v2.40 : No HR data from Polar H7 ?

So I decided to try to get HR data from my Polar H7 and sure enough it is recognized by the F5 (with a smart bluetooth background!) but then no HR data comes though. I checked that I could get HR data from the H7 on my smartphone so it appears to be working properly. Anyone else have that problem ?

UDPATED 25/03 :

Status of BT Heartrate Monitors :

1. BT Only devices :
- Polar H7 : connects but no HR data comes through
2. Dual ANT+/BT :
- Wahoo TICKR : connects over either ANT+ or BT (seen as Dual BT/ANT+ device by the F5), HR data comes through in both modes
- Cardiosport : connects over either ANT+ or BT (seen as Dual BT/ANT+ device by the F5), HR data comes through in both modes
- Viiiiva : connects only over ANT+ (not seen as as a Dual BT/ANT+ device by the F5), HR data comes through in ANT+
  • Tried a 1H30 ride with Polar H7 and old ANT+ Cad/Speed with my Fexix 5 Sapphire (2.40).
No disconnection problem, everything is ok.
  • It seems that the 5Xs with their larger unit/diameter/whatever, do not have these issues
If you check the forum there are other threads related to BT and Ant connectivity issues, but mainly for the F5

I did a second run yesterday with the H7 strap and I got multiple disconnections especially towards the end of the session
Today I tried my Runtastic BT module. It connected but no data were displayed. Both HR modules worked flawlessly with my Suunto traverse
I believe that there is something wrong here and will speak with garmin support
There are just several BT related issues scattered around in the forum

  • I did a 1H30 ride, 1H run and two 45' rowing activies and everything is working perfectly between polar H7 and Fenix 5 sapphire.

Unfortunately these inconsistencies complicate matters even further.
However, there are several BT related issues flowing around (phone connections, straps, power meters) to be ignored or discarded as isolated events
I will reset H7 and give it another go tomorrow
But he fact that the runtastic module data were not being displayed is also worrying
  • I need to add that my Polar H7 is new and as never be paired with other device.
  • This should not really make a difference
I had mine for a while now and was connected to my Suunto prior.
When I got the F5, I removed it from suunto and added it to F5
Yesterday, I created a workout to follow, based on zone training
While following the workout the F5 has a really nice gauge displaying exactly the zone you are and a countdown to the lap finish
From one point onwards it was really frustrating to work hard and see the gauge display zone 2.1 (while I was really at 4.7)
It would reconnect after 20-30 seconds but that happened a lot
As you realize this also messes up the overall session statistics
  • Indeed, so i must be lucky, mine is for the moment really reliable.
On the other hand, optical HR isn't reliable at all in sport mode for my case.
  • I am updated to software 2.90 with my Fenix and still no luck getting my H7 to work with my Fenix 5. Did all the resets etc. It is very strange as the H7 works with ALL the other Bluetooth devices that support BT4.0 out there. There should not really be a need to disconnect it form all other devices if the watch says: Connected. However, my also says connected and then NO-HR data

Another thing i noted is that while in the settings menu it connects and disconnects the whole time. My suspicion is there is a problem with how BT is implemented. I hope Garmin will react to this... Not good enough in a €600 watch
  • My polar H7 works like a charm since 3 weeks with my Fenix5 .

I had problems with the H7 initially.

Make sure that you shut down ALL phone apps that may want to connect to the H7, or even try turning off bluetooth on your phone altogether, and see if that helps at all.
