Preparing for the 5X

I'm a runner and hiker. I've never owned a Garmin before, so the 5X is going to open up a new world for me.

Up until this point, I've always relied on my smartphone for tracking my runs and hikes with apps like Endomondo.

Therefore, I need suggestions on apps to look at using with the 5X to track for running and hiking.

Thanks
  • There are native apps for both on the watch. With native apps, you have data screens that contain data field (so you can pick from a number of native ones, or download others from the CIQ app store.

But there's more! I don't have a device with maps, and I use (and wrote :) ) Hike and Hike2 for hiking (see the link in my sig) Hike2 if for the f5 devices and some of the other newer watches. (it's free, has up to 11 data screens, but doesn't use standard data fields, as I try to just display everything!)

Your activities are going to be uploaded to garmin connect where you can analyse them using the mobile app or the web version. However it is also possible to sync garmin connect with other sites like training peaks or stava if you want to do more sophisticated analysis.

It may possible to link to Endomondo (I don't use it) so that your activities just appear there without using your phone. If all you want to do is have a record of all your activities including heart rate, gps tracks, distance and cadence then garmin connect by itself is sufficient.

    Enjoy
