Poor ANT Connectivity

Just went for my first short bike ride with my f5, with the following ANT devices paired:

Stages Power Meter
Garmin HRM Run
Garmin Speed Sensor
Garmin Varia Rear Radar Light
Garmin Tempe Sensor

All of which I'd previously paired and set-up with my f5 without any problems. All of these devices (apart from the Tempe) were also paired with my Edge 1000 mounted on my handlebars.

Previously, I had all of these (except the Varia) paired with my f3 and the only connection problems I'd encounter during rides would be the Tempe (mounted under my saddle) would sometimes drop out for a single 1-minute reading.

However, with my f5 it's a different (and not good) story - Even before I started the ride, my Stages PM kept disconnecting and reconnecting, and at the end of the ride there's no power recorded at all. During the ride I kept getting messages come up on the f5 that the Varia light had disconnected and reconnected several times. Connection with the Tempe seems to have been lost for about 80% of the time as the temperature shows long blocks clearly taken from the f5's internal sensor (where it's much warmer as it's picking up skin temperature). The heart rate trace also shows a point where it's dropped the connection with the chest strap.

As I said, my setup is the same as I've been using with my f3 for the last 2+ years and apart from lots of very short Tempe drops, I never experienced anything like this. I've also checked the activity as recorded on my Edge 1000, and everything's fine on there.

Is anyone else experiencing similar?

  • I have completed three runs with the F5. The Stryd keeps dropping on each run. 45 min and roughly ten drops. One was for more than one minute.
Spoke to Garmin support on Monday. They recommended that I keep the unit for now - sounds like a software problem?

It does seem like a software issue, I am experiencing the same problem. I spoke with Kun Li @ Stryd over the past 2 days and they are working with Garmin on this problem directly. DCR also identified the issue in his testing and thought it should have been fixed in teh Beta. I posted in his review and he said he is also checking with Garmin on this as well.

@Webvan - Yes, the 5x does not seem to be having the same connection issue with Stryd.

Fenix 5: Same Problem - Stage Power Meter Won't Stay Paired

    Stages Power Meter
Trek Duotrap Speed & Cadence Sensor
    Shimano Di2
    Garmin Edge 810
    Varia Radar (Arriving Tomorrow)
    Garmin Edge Remote

Stages Power Meter will not stay paired. Edge 810 paired successfully operational with all above, except the the Radar which is supposed to arrive tomorrow. I filed a support case with Garmin. They provided me with a handlebar mount for the F5!?? -saying it doesn't work well with the Stages power meter while the F5 is worn on the wrist.

I provided Garmin with a zip file of the entire Garmin file from the watch and photos of the power meter.

    No reply yet.

I use a Stages power meter with Bluetooth connection to my Fenix 5x which seems to work (so far during one mountain bike ride I had no problem). With my Fenix 3 and ANT+ I had continuous troubles with the connection.

It'll be interested to see the results you get with your Varia RRL. You won't see any disconnections shown on Garmin Connect as there's no data recording associated with the Varia - you'll just need to (carefully) keep an eye on your f5 during rides for the "Varia Disconnected" messages that pop up for a couple of seconds with a beep.

Incidentally, when you pair your Varia with your f5 it appears as two devices, a light and a radar, so make sure you pair both if that's what you want (the light pairing turns it off when you finish your ride, the radar pairing shows the approaching vehicle proximity alerts on the watch). To be honest, once I found that the Varia worked (or to be more precise, worked when it managed to stay connected) on my fenix5, I disconnected it again and just stuck to using it on my Edge as it's the sort of thing you need to have permanently in front of you if you're going to get the full advantage of the radar. If you're going to keep checking your wrist for approaching vehicles, you may as well just look over your shoulder. It's a great device though, I actually feel quite vulnerable now if mine ever runs out of juice during a ride. Of course it doesn't replace the need to look behind, but I do most of my riding on narrow country lanes with barely any traffic, so it's great to get that heads-up when there's a vehicle coming up behind me a couple of hundred meters back.

    ANT+ power issues w/ Powertap C1

ok, I'll admit I didn't read every single post in this rather long thread.... but I skimmed most of them. thought I'd add my experience with a brand I haven't seen mentioned in my skimming.

I'm having ANT+ issues with a fenix 5 and a Powertap C1. I just did a short test ride on the trainer to confirm the issue before making that dreaded call to Garmin. You can see the ride on these links and compare with the 520 I also use.

    Fenix 5 -- https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1677657974
    520 -- https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1677656421

Initially when I paired the fenix 5 to the powertap c1, power and stability were fine for two long rides. But.... cadence and balance were missing and or inaccurate. Found that the fenix had paired over BT, so I removed that pairing and made sure it was connecting via ANT+. Now, power, cadence and balance are all getting populated, but it's dropping constantly as you'll see in the link above.

I can't recall ever dropping signal from the powertap C1 on my 520 or on the 920xt which the fenix replaces (Assuming I don't end up returning it). Also worth noting, I put a new battery in the power meter before this confirmation ride.
