My F5 just spontaneously updated from 2.0 to 2.4 without warning (unlike F3/HR, which gave you a pop up asking whether you wanted to update). Anyone know where the change log is so I know what's different?
Getting this watch is still in my distant future, but I wonder, is it correct that the only Garmin-supported ways to update firmware are Wifi, Express or Connect Mobile?
For the other Fenix'es and Epix, all beta versions and public releases were always posted on the forum, with a link to a download page that included the changelog.
I never liked Suunto updating my Ambit 1 without warning. Garmin was a huge improvement in that respect, allowing one to postpone updates (until after an important event for example), and being transparent about the changes made. It would be a loss if that changed.
Of course there is an option not use Wifi, Connect Mobile or Express, and to download firmwares from elsewhere, but then no changelogs are available, and there are no guarantees that that option will be available in the future.
Maybe not. With the vahr, for example, when the full file is on the watch, it just goes ahead and updates. (when they do a public beta, it's still a manual copy of files to the watch, and since the version number is higher than the production, it doesn't get replaced)
I think it's so people are always on the latest FW when they contact support.
I've read from a few posts on the forum that their Fenix 5 auto-updated to 2.4. When I first connected it to GC mobile it did not give me an update prompt, I then tried to update it manually in the settings but the watch told me that I had to set up WiFi in order to proceed. After doing so via Garmin Express (couldn't do it via the mobile app, a bit annoying) I got the exact same prompt to update as was usual on the Fenix 3, meaning I was able to choose between updating now or postponing it.
