GPS accuracy first two tests

Hi guys,

Two quick activities with my new F5X (received today in the UK from Cotswold Outdoors)
1 sec recording; GPS+GLONASS

A walk from work down my usual path:
https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1625620420 (quite good I think)

A run around the docks:
https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1625726383 (not as good in two areas, otherwise OK)

EDIT: I had smart recording turned on; here is a quick follow-up with every second recording:
https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1625854447

EDIT 2: Weird, Settings: About-->EPO currently says expired, even after syncing via bluetooth&PC

Well, it looks like the Accuracy thread will be as long as it was on the F2. What if you turn GLONAS off? Seeing this I am glad I did not preorder.
  • Yeah, not impressed either. However, all runs were GPS+GLONASS and only the third was with every second recording on. It will take quite a bit more testing, I think..
On top of that, EPO is currently expired, no matter how many times and how I sync.

    Sitting still test.

25 minutes I tried putting my F5x next to my 3 in the 25m the 3 thought it had gone 0.72km the 5x thought it had gone 0.42km :-)

Resounding win in one random test for the 5x :-)

I've never had any Gps do spectacular with buildings and taller houses along the track. More important, were the distances accurate? My forerunner series and vivoactive hr lay better tracks in town but distances seem to usually match my Fenix 3. Also, walking or slow jogging tracks are always zig zagged more.

My EPO file says expired as well - despite sync 1 min before. So I guess there is a bug to fix :)

I was thinking about pulling the trigger on the 5X, but after seeing those tracks I think I'm going to hold off. Those are pretty bad.

Think I'll wait and see how other people's tests go.

I have had nothing but a years worth of issues with my F3HR, and am leaning more towards the Suunto Spartan Sport with the wrist based HR. I have an Suunto A3P and the GPS is the most accurate of any device I have ever owned (and I've owned many).

My A3P is accurate, consistent, and just works every time. If the new Spartan Sport with wrist HR yields good results I will probably go that route.

Just have been let down too many times with the fenix line (including activities being lost), and this one looks to be starting off in the same direction.
  • Looks just like the Fenix 3, unfortunately. There's a huge thread on GPS accuracy in the F3 forums, of course. The same things hold true: every cell phone I've owned gives a better track than the Fenix watches do, and I tried five F3's. People will say it's due to trees and buildings, but those don't bother my phones. And people will say they are not interested in "pretty tracks", that it's a training watch, but people have different expectations of their watch and are entitled to them.

I noticed the same on the F3HR. However, distances were identical (within 10 mtrs over 5-6km) of my Tomtom watch each time. The Tomtom track looks a lot better on the map, but in each instance the end result (and the splits) are the same. While I understand an accurate track may be important to some people, for me it is only about whether the distance is correct. All of the manufacturers use different smoothing algorithms on their watches, but I don't care too much about the look of the track, provided the distance is within 1% of being accurate. I know this impacts other users to a greater degree.

I was waiting with interest to see what these tests would show.
I used to have a fenix2 that was an absolute nightmare. I sold it to get an ambit3 peak. Whilst the ambit is really very accurate I do miss the Garmin intuitiveness.
Whilst the fenix 5 is producing tracks like the above I will be sticking with Suunto's reliability.
