Multiple map layers?

In anticipation of my 5X arriving (fingers crossed), I've been playing around with Garmin BaseCamp to prepare routable topo maps (from OSM-derived sources) for a planned April hike in Patagonian Chile. My question is about elevation data / contour lines.

It seems like many of the handheld Garmin GPS units support loading and layering multiple maps, such that you can have satellite imagery, routable road/trail maps, and a "map" of just elevation contour lines, and then turn each of them on/off independently on the device (depending on what you want to see). This seems pretty ideal: I'd probably just look at the trail most of the time, but it would be nice to have the contour data still available, for example, to show the elevation profile mid-route.

Does anyone know if the 5X will support this feature? Did the Garmin Epix? (Without direct user reports, I'm prepared to assume that the 5X starts with the same map/nav featureset as the Epix watches).

I ask because if the 5X can only work with a single map layer, I'm under the impression that I need to "merge" OSM topo maps with contour files in order to create a single blended map. That seems to require playing around with some open source apps and scripts... or paying the (relatively cheap) openMTBmaps subscription to get it done automatically.

Advice?
  • Dean, it would be great if you could explain exactly how to do this. I have also seen a vague reference to this in another thread but have so far been unable to do it.

Where do you remove the map datafield before re-adding it to the run activity?

I have the map datafield added in the run activity, but do not see where else I could remove this other than in a different app such as the navigation app. I'm also not sure what you mean by turning the map off in navigation. I can only add and remove map datafields from apps, and so far have been unable to disable the distance datafield at the bottom even when slecting zero datafields when adding a map.

If anyone has complete and detailed steps in order to display a map when navigating a course without seeing the distance at the bottom then I am sure a number of people here would be grateful. So far I have failed in my attempts to do this and cannot find another thread with a good description of this either.

I just found there is an option to turn on and off the map in the main navigation settings (not the navigation app). But no matter whether I have the map enabled or disabled, or added to the run app or not, I always get the distance at the bottom of the map when navigating a course. I never get 2 maps even when enabled in navigation settings and added as a data screen. Although if I disable in the navigation settings, and remove from the run app I do not get a map screen.

Please can someone who has done this explain how before I throw the watch out of the window.
  • OK, here's the thing. I am still awaiting delivery of my F5X so may have this wrong.
To get rid of data field in the Map screen for a course you need to go to the App settings and delete the map (yes delete rather than edit) and add a new map with the option of no field.
So Settings > Apps > Run (or whichever you use) > Data Screens > Map (and this is where I guess as I don't have the watch yet); delete; add new; 0 field.
Try this an let us all know.

Tried that. Did not work for me.

    Bummer.
    Anyone?
Who posted originally that you can delete map and add new to solve this? Please instruct us all, step by step.

Thks a lot for this !! Unfortunately, I don't understand : for the GPS (F5X) version downloaded from http://garmin.opentopomap.org, there is only .img file, so no .TYP file ?
I also try with PC version : the OpenTopoMap.typ is corrupted according to TYP editor :-(

Could you tell me more ?

    Thks a lot

TYP file (map version PC) is with the corrupted?
It is possible to take out and to load the TYP file from the IMG file (map - version Garmin). Tool app: https://www.gmaptool.eu/en/content/gmaptool
  • OK thks GPS_Maniak, it's clear.
I have extract the .TYP file from the the .img file (france OpenTopoMap.img downloaded from http://garmin.opentopomap.org) and opened it with TYPViewer. I'll try your tip to custom the map ;-)

NB : the pb with corrupted .TYP file seems to be linked to an issue with TYPViewer and too long folder pathname (with special characters) :-(
  • Prefer to change green color to #98CC60, better display on F5X (NB : this is the value for forest area on TopoMaps from Garmin...)
  • I was on the fence of 5X or 5 as concerned over the versatility of the maps- this thread has me completely sold on the 5X, I will look forward to experimenting with these layers once the watch arrives!
