GPS Accuracy

So it begins.

I will have mine Fenix 5 on Saturday and will start doing comparisons to an Ambit 3 Peak. I don't have an F3 to directly compare to as of now.

Anyone have an F3 and F5 to compare?

At least my Forerunner 610 has a Sirf chipset.

Sorry for that, 620 of course!

I am happy with my fenix 5 too. I mostly depends on the owners scope. The fenix 5 is a pretty cool alround watch, but because of the weak GPS performance, owners who heavely
"need" accurate GPS performance, won?t share our point of view.
  • I used to spent a lot of time nitpicking but I realised that I was only going to get accurate pace measurements through a footpod (Stryd in my case). I prefer to focus on the great aspects of the 5X, rather than on its, at times, less precise representation of where I ran.

I used to own a V800/Ambit 3 Peak, watches that are regarded as the best from GPS accuracy standpoint, but I found them lacking enough in other areas so I promptly returned them for a refund. Not to mention that they were not the holy grail of watches with infallible razor sharp GPS- quite to the contrary.

In summary, could the f5 series have been better? Yes. Do I care any longer? No! (coming from a guy who went through 4 F3+F3HR units, thinking something was wrong with my watch)

By now i see it the same way, but I also believe that it is important to show what the wishes of the customers are and where the limitations of this watch are. I do not want to call it nitpicking, but pointing out the room for improvement; call it constructive feedback. Personally i think Garmin did a pretty good job, beside of the GPS accuracy; for my needs it is barely good enough.
  • Just a walk lately but this link shows the tracks from Garmin Fenix 5 and Polar M400.

I can see a difference between heights but otherwise it is about the same. I will shut down 3D-speed and Glonass from now on and hope for better results.

    Are you kidding?
While the Polar shows a somewhat smooth route, the Fenix route is a mess

And that is a perfect example to show why some people complain about the GPS and others don't! The Polar trace is definitely smoother but if you follow the whole trace, sometimes the F5 is more on e road than the polar (albeit a bit jagged). The F5 is defineitly within the bounds of GPS accuracy being a road width away from the road mostly (what's that, 5m?). I wouldn't call this perfect but it's not a mess IMHO.
  • Installed firmware version 5.40, the GPS accuracy is now worse than it has been since the initial firmware!
(5.30 was the most accurate yet)
  • Make sure you soak the device before using it and then post a Garmin Connect link to you activity so we can see how much of a mess it is.

GPS Firmware is still 4.30. so it's probably not worse, but still bad.
wonder if they will fix this at all.
