GPS Accuracy

So it begins.

I will have mine Fenix 5 on Saturday and will start doing comparisons to an Ambit 3 Peak. I don't have an F3 to directly compare to as of now.

Anyone have an F3 and F5 to compare?
  • I have been using Polar M400 for many years and it has been a great product. But this spring I saw Fenix 5 on the market and decided to buy it. With Polar, the gps tracking has been perfect but with Fenix 5 very bad. I am very disappointed and can not give it back to the store because it has been a while since I bought it. As you can see on the image, correct track is at the right but the red Garmin trace is way off to the left. :(

I share the same story, had M400 wanted to upgrade to the high-end Fenix 5 and now I'm stuck with a worse GPS!
  • Agree with you on most of what you said. However I don't believe the problem can be fixed with firmware updates, it's hardware. I would love to be proven wrong.

If it's a hardware issue, they're never gonna do anything about it.
A recall is too expensive at this point, so they're just going to ignore the issue until Fenix 6
  • I do have very similar troubles with the F5x. It doesn't chance anything if I use GPS or GPS+Glonass. My GPSmap tracks the climb correctly, the F5x produces what I attach to this post.ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1240767.png
  • GPS behaving much worse (which is saying something!) since the 5.10 update.

The track at the beginning is offset, then it shows a massive spike in pace as it jumps into the correct position. Only had 2 runs but it's done it both times. First split ends up reporting way too fast.

You can see in the pics, start and finish should be in roughly the same spot. Finish is the correct one.

Can anyone else confirm that the 5.10 update not only doesn't improve but actually worsens the GPS accuracy?

Seems about the same to me... accuracy for my run this morning was better than usual. It still seems to just depend on the day/luck/phase of the moon... after making this post the accuracy will probably be off 25% tomorrow!

After FW 5.3 update, I have still the same problem of GPS accuracy: under-estimation of the distance by 3 to 5% for each run. The record on a map is not that bad, bud the distance is wrong. Garmin changed my watch a few weeks ago, and it did'nt change anything. This + the fact that the error is always under-estimation (and not over-estimation) shows for me that this is certainly a problem of firmware. But Garmin seems to deny it. See specific discussion in this forum. Hope it won't be the case, and that Garmin will solve the problem.
  • I have worse track with Fenix 5 sapphire Ed. than Fenix 3 in Stockholm . So bad and the pace was all over the place. So disappointed and to bad the didn't announced 935 before I bought my Fenix 5. I want to return my watch but don't think they going to let me. Unfortunately I also bought a running dynamics pod. This combo is my worst buy of the year.ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1244842.png

It's funny that in all the time I've used gps gadgets, nothing fundamental has changed. If the device has a SIRV chipset, your good, if not..... :)
If you look at the data from fellrnr :http://fellrnr.com/wiki/GPS_Accuracy:

What gives me hope is that the Garmin 610 archived a passable score, a device with a Mediatek chipset
What does not make me happy is, if you look at the scores of the Fenix series.
If the fenix 5 "only" has a firmware problem, the GPS accuracy can at least get mediocre; the Polar M400 is a nice example what a firmware can archieve.
If the fenix 5 has an other technical problem (Antenna....), chances are not in our favour

At least my Forerunner 610 has a Sirf chipset.
