GPS Accuracy

So it begins.

I will have mine Fenix 5 on Saturday and will start doing comparisons to an Ambit 3 Peak. I don't have an F3 to directly compare to as of now.

Anyone have an F3 and F5 to compare?

This looks like a pretty big difference to me:

As I said there are points on both graphs where they each struggled. Here's a counterpoint to your example:

Which is why picking out one small section isn't proof of an issue. In this case I think your two tracks look pretty similar overall, with issues on both sides. Also, as someone observed above, your fenix 5 is on old firmware; the new fw has a GPS update which seemed to have helped a little bit.

Fair enough. I'll upgrade the F5 and go for few more runs. I do like my F5 and I'm not trying to bash it around, just found it to be a bit more choppy in terms of GPS than FR935.
  • Fellrnr's conclusion on F5X's GPS performance.
Hopefully Garmin will significantly up their game as being so close to the F3 is a little scary!

As long as Fellnr tests Garmin watches using the Smart setting, his results should be ignored. He needs to either test the watch using every second, or publish his tests that show no difference between smart and every sec. I personally don't think there are any tests to publish.

In a recent Facebook thread he was asked to test the Fenix 5 using every sec. He said he would consider it, but he said that it takes quite a bit of time to do this testing. He might not get to it for a while. It seems though that he managed to whip through his second test of the watch using the new firmware, so it can't take THAT much time.
  • I agree, it's almost too suspicious how Garmin units get handled- especially when compared to the likes of the Suunto Spartan Ultra.
  • Here is the comparison betweem V2.90 and V2.95

Still happy with the look of the map and the distance. Pace tracking needs to be improved - it's useless at the moment. I hope Garmin reads these posts..
  • Does the new beta contain a GPS firmware update?
I did not see anything mentioned in the change log
What is the version you see in the watch for the GPS module?
    Current one is 4.30
