GPS Accuracy

So it begins.

I will have mine Fenix 5 on Saturday and will start doing comparisons to an Ambit 3 Peak. I don't have an F3 to directly compare to as of now.

Anyone have an F3 and F5 to compare?
  • Just ordered 935 myself, will probably return f5 if issues not fixed by the time 935 ships.
  • Have to be honest I am not sure why everyone is so fixated on how "smooth" a GPS track is. The main issues for me are in following order of importance with respect to GPS accuracy:

    • Distance Accrual Overall Accuracy
    • Lap Distance Accuracy
    • Pace (Lap and Instant, but with Stryd Instant less important)

These are the key things that affect my training and race performance, not how smooth a track looks. Given everything else equal, track accuracy might have some importance to me, but to be honest if it did not affect any of the above items I would not care much.

I'm with you on this to some extent, but I think some of the larger deviations can be bothersome. There was one run posted above the F5 went 50 meters or more off the line of the 935. This had to change the average pace significantly for the runner.

Every few runs I'll get a segment where the pace is completely out to lunch. More times then not, it will be a deviation that dropped my avg pace incredibly fast despite a change in my effort or terrain. Every watch I've owned has done this, but it'd be great to minimize the effect.

I think the fenix 5 is a better day-to-day watch (for me), but the 935 has the edge as far as using it while running (weight) and overall accuracy (in my experience; others may disagree).

As an aside, that 935 "glass" screen is quite the fingerprint magnet.

Curious as to why? I've also ordered the 935xt. Is it purely looks? At least in videos, the 935xt looks like a larger 5s with a black rim.
  • Frankly, I'm uncertain what I'm doing at this point :(

I have the F5X and FR935- still undecided which one to keep as well:D potentially both:DD
Oh, I also have two Stryds as well..
  • Looks like you have Stryd too many, I'd be happy to give it a try if you don't know what to do with it ;-)

If you need maps on a watch regularly it would make sense to keep the F5x I suppose, if not...

Here is a power walk / run interval I did today.

I am very happy with the GPS on this watch. Much better than my F3HR. Seems to be just as good as my A3P so far.
  • 735XT vs fenix 5 - Both set for 1s recording and GPS + GLONASS, fenix on left and 735XT on right

fenix 5 track is OK, but definitely in this test the 735XT track is better. Had Stryd connected to both and set for Pace Always on both and Distance Indoors on fenix 5 (no option for distance on the 735XT). The fenix 5 continues to drop the Stryd Power meter often and even when connected for Pace only and not distance the Stryd seems to screw up distance accrual on teh fenix 5 as the fenix only recorded 3.85 miles for this run and you can see in above file on MyGPSFiles the GPS track is 4 miles, the same as was recorded on the 735XT.

Generally disappointing as I cannot use the fenix 5 to train right now, have to revert to the 735XT. Too bad as GPS Accuracy would have been fine for me with Stryd issue. Hoping 935, when it arrives is better for actually training.
  • Has it been confirmed that the 935 doesn't have the same issues with the Stryd that you're experiencing with the fenix 5? I've been planning to pick one up soon.

As to the tracks, yours seem similar to what I've experienced – the fenix 5 is fine, but could be better...at least as compared to the 735/935.
  • I have not seen any issues in running with Stryd at all (both F5X and FR935);
