GPS Accuracy

So it begins.

I will have mine Fenix 5 on Saturday and will start doing comparisons to an Ambit 3 Peak. I don't have an F3 to directly compare to as of now.

Anyone have an F3 and F5 to compare?

    So it would appear the metal case impacts GPS tracking accuracy compared to the plastic forerunners? That's not good.... I'll be following this thread for conclusions.
  • Please find a short run to compare:

    Here's your two runs compared in Mygpsfiles. Actually - F5 is not that bad! Zoom in and you'll see deviations. But it's not way off what 910 tracked...

  • Not bad indeed. Here's 3 activities I recorded with my 5X:

    Two quick activities with my new F5X (received today in the UK from Cotswold Outdoors)
    GPS+GLONASS

    A walk from work down my usual path:
    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1625620420 (quite good I think)

    A run around the docks:
    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1625726383 (not as good in two areas, otherwise OK)

    EDIT: I had smart recording turned on; here is a quick follow-up with every second recording:
    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1625854447

    EDIT 2: Weird, Settings: About-->EPO currently says expired, even after syncing via bluetooth&PC
  • The run shows some of the problems I saw, poor multipath mitigation when there are buildings on one side :

    and my FR235/F5 comparison :

    No EPO here either but that's only useful if you get started without having a good view of the sky, it won't impact accuracy otherwise.
  • Shame, looks like GPS tracking is at best just OK for fenix 5, about what I saw with my fenix 3. Distance accrual will likely be accurate like the fenix 3 was eventually, but track accuracy will not be that great.
  • How is the GPS accuracy on the Edge 520 vs the Fenix 5 ?
  • Good lord we've starting this already?

    You all do realize that this forum represents a VERY small percentage of actual Fenix users? My F3 has been solid and I've posted numerous tracks to prove it. Don't expect to attract happy users to this thread to post their excellent tracks.

    Please, if you know you'll be unhappy with GPS traces that aren't perfect (despite total distances being within 1%), buy the F5 from a store with a good return policy. That way if you're not satisfied you can return it and move along.

    Are you saying the GPS track on the right land vs the left land of a highway? Its not accurate but it is on the highway?

    I can live with the 1% difference.

    I am just afraid it might go crazy and zoom half a mile away and come back.

    Good lord! People complaining about people complaining about GPS accuracy already?

    I agree - your tracks does look a bit too noisy.

    And exactly the same here.

    @Garmin
    I'm not to decide whether this is a problem or not, but I suggest you take a look into this. It better not be F3-history repeats!

    @Olu.F
    How would you know this is only representing a few readers? I sure can tell you, that readers from other forums on the Net is reading these threads too. Maybe you can see the stats on unique readers in this thread? I can't... Anyway - lets go back to focus on tracking and the real world tests showing issues, thanks.
