Steps history on device?

I was comparing the Fenix 3 and 5 manuals and can't find how to review the steps history on the Fenix 5 (obviously it will be in Connect, but I am interested in the on-device history). Does anyone know if this feature will be available on the F5 (maybe it's on a photo somewhere)?
  • I believe there is a steps widget

[Edit] actually that only gives you the current day. I can't see there is a way to get steps history on the watch.

Hit the start button while displaying the widget. Works on my fenix 3. it is just the last week though.

Thanks, but it's not sure that this will also work on the Fenix 5. This history feature is described in the manual for the Fenix 3, but not in the Fenix 5 manual. Either it was left out the manual by mistake, or it is no longer present.

Because Garmin products are becoming more and more dependent on a (continuous) connection via Connect Mobile, I would not be surprised to see more and more on-watch functionality getting replaced by online functions in Connect. It makes perfect business sense (less firmware changes needed for an ever-increasing number of different devices), but it would make the Fenix 5 much less attractive for people who plan to use the device primarily without a smartphone.

I agree, the watch shouldn't be reduced to simply a transmission device to a phone. In this case I'd have to ask what are we paying a premium for? Garmin could simply make a small black box to wear anywhere on the body and transmit the data to a phone for viewing, I want to be able to see the simpler info straight away on the watch not have to dig the phone out.
  • I wonder just how important step count is to the majority of people using this device? It's not an activity tracker per se. It's a premium sports watch with activity tracking. I can only speculate, but for most people purchasing the F5, step counting history on the device is not going to be a big deal.

But then what do I know?
  • It works the same way in the Fenix 5 as the Fenix 3:

    1) Select steps widget to see today's steps
    2) Hit upper right button to enter > Instantly see steps for past 7 days (each day)
    3) Press down > See distance per day, for last 7 days

    Cheers
  • Thanks Ray, it's good to know that it works the same as on the F3.
I process and store the activity/sleep data offline, wrote some software for that, but the history on the watch is still nice to have as well!
