Building routes with turn by turn?

Do we know enough about how the Fenix 5X will work to know how to plan routes and enjoy TBT when following them?

Ski season will end and bike season will get a lot more fun and interesting, right about when the F5X becomes available. I will be riding in new places, and it will be convenient for planning reasons to know the distance and elevation gain for some of them. The easiest way to know that is to plot the route on a map, and if I'm going to do that anyway, I'd like to be able to use the result to navigate.

I know the F5X will be capable of turn by turn directions, I use this feature on my F3.

What I'm hoping to find out is how to go about creating routes for this. The process is a bit cumbersome for the F3HR, and I don't know how it might be different on the F5X?
  • Get me OFF the fence

I've own my F3 for almost 2-years, with no big issues. And can't really justify dropping another 6-8 bills on a 5X. However should Garmin get TBT working in fairly easy intuitive fashion, I might be in line to buy. It would be great on races or group runs/rides to not have to worry about directions & when to turn.
  • Yes.. that fence..

I have absolutely no valid reason whatsoever to by the 5X. I use a Fenix 3 and Epix. What justifications are there?
"It has optical HR!" (which I probably won't use very often)
"It has impromptu roundtrip calculation!" (Well, actually, I will probably use that, but not every day)
"Now I'll only need ONE device for everything!" (Great! Sell all that other Garmin stuff! - but I don't want to.. what if the 5X turns out to be a mistake)
"It is newer!" (Firmware updates and temper tantrums every week)
"It counts floors more accurately!" (Grasping at straws here)
"It is faster!" (Faster maps than the Epix would be awesome)

    Please, give me a reason...

Personally I use BaseCamp to create routes. The trouble is, BaseCamp seems to think it knows the capabilities of various devices. So, while it sends routes (minimal number of waypoints to describe the route, relying on the device itself to compute the turn by turn from its onboard maps) to Edges, it always sends a track to the Epix, and there seemed to be no way to tell it to do something else. So whether this works on the 5X depends on whether BaseCamp knows that Garmin is touting its ability to do real turn by turn. If it does work, then you get the advantage of using exactly the same maps and (probably) the same routing algorithms, so there will be no to few surprises when actually riding the route.

    I love new gadgets :D
Epix and fenix 3 - already sold!
  • Basecamp does not fully and correctly support the F3

While you can send waypoints to the F3 it is much different then the F2 and you just get a better result using GC or other non Garmin
