Anyone upgrading to the 5S or 5 from the 3HR? If so, why?

I have a fenix 3 HR and have a fenix 5 on preorder.. I have to admit that I am having second thoughts about it. Not sure if the 5 will be that much of an upgrade over the 3 HR...

I figure I can probably get $350-$400 on resale out of my 3 HR and the fenix 5 I have on preorder is the sapphire version which comes in at $700! My issue is mainly that IF the fenix 5 is really worth that much of a price difference...

Anyone coming from a 3HR and planning on going to the 5? If so, why?
  • I agree that it *could* be really cool and valuable, but I'm still curious how smart it will ultimately be.

If it plotted routes using Strava's Global Running Heatmap data... that would be great. If it merely plots based on roads, then far less so (with or without path or sidewalk, traffic density, size or availability of shoulder to run on).

It seems like I almost always have a grasp of distance in "known areas", so I would lean on it while traveling (where any of the above considerations are important and unknown to me).

Looking forward to some real world use reviews.

    ... but that 5x looks huge! :)

NORD, I agree. It reminds me of MapMyRun's auto-route creator. I've used it only once or twice because it was randomly placing me in spots I might not otherwise want to be. I would assume it would use Garmin Connect's own heatmap as a resource, but then again, may not. Still, there are times when I would like to try it, just not sure it's at the cost of the size increase on my not-exactly-huge wrist.
  • I would "upgrade" from the F3HR to the F5S purely for aesthetic reasons - smaller size and snap on/off bands, if it weren't for the reduction in battery life. I use my 3HR on long cycle days and the loss of a few hours of battery life would stress me out too much to spend the £550... I'll wait for a small fenix 6 with hopefully improved battery life :)

    xx

I got the Vivosmart HR+ and I didnt like it and return. Right now I am using walk/run/vacation tracking using mapmywalk and use Edge 520 for bicycling. I am getting the F5 to track everything now from one place. Yes, and wear a watch for the looks. LOL

    CIQ, footpod calibration and new...

For me I like to stay current when possible. In my old mind my F3HR not supporting the latest CIQ (to me, in my old mind DOS vs Windows 10 or MacOS), problems with auto calibration (which wasn't a problem just a lack of knowledge on my part as I learned later I didn't need auto calibrate) and having something new was enough for me to dump my F3HR for a Forerunner 735XT. I loved the look and feel of the F3HR and it never gave me any problems, i.e. did all the things I wanted it to do and more. I miss the option to "Resume Later" and when doing a run or "Floors Climbed" and like I said just the look and feel of quality. I'm planning to keep (maybe) my 735XT but can hardly wait for the new F5S sapphire, which I have on pre-order from heartratemonitors.com.

I sold my Fenix 3HR yesterday for $400 and just waiting on my Fenix 5

For me I like to have the latest and greatest. I really wanted to the new software and I was afraid it wasnt coming to the the 3HR

So until my beautiful 5 shows up I am going to use my Apple Watch. Which pissed me with my run last night and then again this morning with my Crossfit work out. I connected it to my Scosche Rythm+ and then took the watch off. Well since I have a passcode it paused the workout. With the Fenix, I just start the workout set it aside and then when done stop the workout on the watch. EASY EASY!!! I realize how great the Fenix series is after 15 hours back on my apple watch.

Preorder cant get here fast enough

Going from a F3HR to a F5 there is a significant increase in processor power and memory with a significant decrease in size and weight. The F5X is almost exactly the same size and weight as the F3HR while the F5 is smaller and the F5S is MUCH smaller. If you like all of your features on your F3HR and don't feel like you need more features, then the F5 is a great upgrade to get the same features in a smaller and faster package. The screen is the same size with a higher resolution and the battery life is actually better. I'm a big guy(6'3" ~235lbs) so I don't really notice the size of the F3HR, but I know it is a big deterrent to a lot of people. I am really happy with my F3HR and with the Triathlon season about to start here I am probably not going to upgrade for a few months. But when I do, it will be to a F5X i think because the size isn't a big deal for me and I think the mapping will be useful for when I go hiking or hunting in the cascades. I was also wondering what kind of new features the new Forerunner 935 might have(if the rumors are true) and was assuming that garmin is probably going to wait a few weeks to release it after the F5 line has been shipping. It would make sense for them to have developed it in parallel but for the release to have been delayed so as not to muddy the waters at release of their new flagship watch line.

I actually got a 5Sapphire yesterday and I am torn on keeping it. I dont like the size decrease from the 3HR. Also dont like the smaller bands.

For me the 3HR stood out and looked bulky. Now to me the 5 I am wearing is looking like any other time piece out there.

I do love the performance increase and the screen and font sizes

    what to do>>>hmmm
