Anyone upgrading to the 5S or 5 from the 3HR? If so, why?

For me. 5 and 5s do not make sense as they offer little news for a f3hr owner. But likely I will get the 5x due to TOPO maps and route planning.
I travel a lot and it is a nice option to go out from the hotel and press "I want to run 10K"...no local area knowledge needed

Personally I don't see a reason to go from the 3HR to a 5 or 5S unless you're looking for a slimmer/sleeker looking version. If (when) I upgrade it'll be the 5X.

I agree the 5X, for the mapping, would be a worthwhile upgrade if someone wants mapping but I am thinking along the lines of you both, that the 5 is not really worth it.. I can see maybe the 5S if someone wants a smaller watch but I am one of the few who do not mind the 3HR size...

I think my preorder was based on new toy lust alone and not on weather or not it's worthwhile.. I still have plenty of time to cancel my preorder of the 5 and I am definitely leaning towards doing that.

My 3HR works fine and I don't have any issues with it at all. It's also in pretty good condition, all things considered...

I will be purchasing either the 5X or the 5 when they are released. Over a four month period (Sept-Dec 2016) I purchased 4 different 3HR's, and all were returned due to the well-documented altimeter/barometer issue. Three of these watches came from retail shops in two different States and the fourth came directly from Garmin Support. I loved the watch and all functions other than the malfuntioning altimeter/barometer. I have a long positive history of owning and using Gamin Forerunner and Edge devices, but due to the time period this 3HR issue has been recognized and not corrected, I lost confidence that Garmin is going to be able remedy this issue with new firmware. However, due to my past successful history with Garmin, I am optimistic that the 5's well work as advertised and am looking forward to purchasing one upon their release.

My wife thinks they should impose a mandatory 3-week waiting period.

I have not had the issue at all on my 3HR..

I just preordered the 5. Currently wearing the 3HR daily. I just want something a little smaller and I like new devices. It's not worth the upgrade monetarily I imagine, bit it has a couple of new and interesting features and it will be a fun new toy.
I was going to wait and see it in a store before purchasing, but my impatience got the better of me.

I watch the video the 3 is like the 5x.

I always sell my smart phone and get the next one, even if it is 1 yr old. Life is too short.

I am going to get the 5 Sapphire and sell my Edge 520.

We all have our opinions, but every time I think about going to a watch from an Edge for cycling I always end up back with an Edge device.

The data fields and screen size of the pure cycling devices is a big advantage over any of the multi-sport watches. My 310, 910, 920, and now F3 always ended up being running+swimming watches with a side of multi-sport when doing a race or brick (still using the edge during the race, but capturing the whole event with the watch).

Otherwise...

I too debate the advantages of the f5.
-I like the idea of a BT hr support (and possibly more later), but really all my stuff is either dual or ANT+ at the moment.
-The newer processor and memory for new CIQ is nice, but I never fell into CIQ apps or widgets anyway.
-I have the F3, so optical HR is possibly nice for resting, etc... but when I wore my wife's vivoactive HR for a week I didn't feel it gave me much
-Strava segments running could be fun?
-Size may be nice, my biggest gripe on the fenix series is how bulky and thick they are (more the thick than bulky, but both are too much). If I went with a f5 I think I'd do the 5S, but it still looks nearly as chunky thick as the f3.

Negatives:
-If I go non-sapphire, I lose wifi. I rarely use it, but now and then BLE sync seems stuck and wifi is my main way to fix it.
-Cost
-Potential new bugs to work through

I question if one could get $400 for a f3hr, and assume an f3 is more like $200-$250 used... so for me ~$350 for a new device is pushing it. If it were $499 rather than $599 I think I'd bite.

... Then again theirs leaked rumors of a 935 coming soon with optical HR enabled while swimming... if it has a barometric altimeter it may catch my eye :)

Wow - the feature to set a distance you want to run and have it calculate a route looks awesome. Did not see that before I pre-ordered the Fenix 5.... May yet be changing my pre-order.
