F5 lacks voice control?

For a device to be smart in 2017 I'd expect more.

Voice control for example.

"Garmin, start running "
"garmin pause"

If you feel fresh during an workout "garmin add 10 1min intervals with 1 min rest between" and the watch should be smart enough to alter alter current workout

"garmin, previous interval ". Redo the last interval when you pressed the wrong button.

For f5x voice commands like "garmin, directions to X" Would be nice.
  • Supporting that kind of thing is one reason the Apple watch has battery life of a day or so. If that's what you want, you should probably consider the Apple watch.

I think we could probably agree that Apple and Android watches are generally smartwatches with some fitness features, and the Fenix watches are generally fitness/outdoors watches with some smart features. The technology isn't there yet for doing everything really well with great battery life. Pick your compromise.

There are various markets and it is a tough cookie trying to please all. For example I would prefer Fenix to be even more rugged, more accurate in basic GPS, compass and baro, and have a monstrous battery life. I could not care less for 70% of the gimmicks like steps per day or floors climbed or similar nonsense. Voice control? Nope.

But I understand that some people want it. That's OK. It's simply a question of what market G wants to target. To my dismay, I feel like G is moving away from profi grade hardcore reliable units to flashy marketing traps.

Another probem woud be command reccognition.
Eventhough I am quite good in English, I doubt the watch would understand all my commands.

Siri ANd OK Google are hopless for me in english. And they suck in my native language.

I do not really see a "need" for this in bigger scale fitness market. Most races my breathing is so wheezy toward end that the watch would likely not understand me :D
  • Im running 70-100k per week. An apple watch is the last thing Id replace my garmin with haha.

I get your points. I think the gps is stable enough. This is a tiny unit on a planet spinning around its own axis and around the sun trying to have signal with a satelite spinning around the earth. There will always be margin for error in gps watches.

An aside, but I think the main problems with GPS have to do with the weak signal strength, signal scatter/reflection against buildings etc plus the extra error inserted by the US Mil.
  • And it would really be fun on a race start if many people are trying to tell teir watches to do something while others are are trying to convince their watch to something else :D
  • Not sure about voice commands on the Fenix, maybe for certain indoor activities or low intensity work outs?

I've been using the Airpods (truly wireless earbuds from Apple) for a few of my trail runs and I have not had much luck with Siri (voice command). I trail run in the wilderness so cellphone reception is very spotty, I imagine if Garmin were to add voice commands on the Fenix it would rely on a data connection as well. No data, No Siri.

Sadly, I start to sound like Darth Vader when I run on rocky 6% grade trails. The times that I got Siri to work, it still cannot recognize what I said. :D

    Yes, isn't that great?

    No touch screen, either.

If we had a model without the OHRM it would be perfect!

The 'extra error inserted by the US Mil' was removed some years back - http://www8.garmin.com/aboutGPS/ Bottom of page, last line.
  • Agree totally Gaijin. Heaven forbid voice control - imagine what might happen at an event start; and touchscreen control for triathlons.

OHR is coming but it's not there yet. Save unit costs and offer one without OHR and chest strap only.
