I think it will be good to have one central place to have the latest news people here about the updated release date. DCR said it looks like early March. The garmin site says 5-8 weeks but thats the default time on all new products. Everywhere I read it says "By end of Q1" which is the end of March. Rei still doesnt have it listed yet either. Has anyone heard anything more specific?
Talked to REI again today they still think early March for pre-order.

Talking to retailers wont help you guys. Garmin updates them as frequent as they update us in this thread. (Never)
The best lead we have is the firmware release. To me it says that beta testers of the device gets the "golden master release" and its sent to the manufacturer for putting it on first batch of watches to ship.

Really though, the best information actually comes from Ray (DCRAINMAKER) -- he talks with Garmin HQ and retailers who get the first shipments (Clever Training). He stated yesterday that he's getting his final version "very, very soon" -- which I would assume means in a few days. I would put the first shipment to retailers to last week or so in Feb, meaning very late Feb/ early March we'll be getting the first public units live.

Sounds very credible and plausible. I got my F3 first week in march back in 2015. Lets see how it turns out.

I've stated before and the conversation I had with the REI employee who place the orders with Garmin, he made it clear again REI will only list on the website products for pre-order that have a 30 day manufacture commitment this was why the very first orders on the F3 and I also had my edge 820 canceled because of Garmin moving the commit date back outside of the 30 day guaranteed window. So based on REI not having the Fenix 5 listed yet and Clevertraining still holding to the expected end of March delivery date I personally I think release will be end of March or first week in April.

I've heard this argument before but here's what REI's actual policy says:
"Both backorder and preorder items automatically cancel if it takes REI more than 30 days to send them. We can extend that 30-day window if you call 1-800-426-4840 and ask us to."
To me, (1) that means it's possible for pre-orders to have been made greater than 30 days out (which is the only reason they would be cancelled - indeed this happened when I ordered my F3HR through them last year and (2) this speaks less to how REI makes decisions about when an item is made available for sale and more about what they'll do if the projected shipping date goes beyond 30 days. Even when this happens, they offer the buyer the option to keep their order (again speaking from F3HR experience)
mjulianb, I'm curious where you saw DCR's comment. I agree that what he says has reason to be reliable but didn't see it on his F5 page/comments - not questioning it, just checking that I'm not missing another source!
Yeah, I'm thinking DCR is about to get his hands on one soon based on his recent comments.
His comment on his blog (comment #1113) is the one where he said " As for a final product in my hands…likely very very soon."
He also commented today that we can expect an in depth review mid-March, but he'll be publishing more info and videos "soon" (comment #1137). It seems like beta testing has been ongoing, and is a large and diverse group of testers.
Any way you look at it, it's progress and it's looking good for a timely release. I'm getting excited...
