I think it will be good to have one central place to have the latest news people here about the updated release date. DCR said it looks like early March. The garmin site says 5-8 weeks but thats the default time on all new products. Everywhere I read it says "By end of Q1" which is the end of March. Rei still doesnt have it listed yet either. Has anyone heard anything more specific?
Garmin has posted software/firmware updates for both Fenix 5 and 5s. I don't see anything recent for the 5x.
I think this is good news that the software is stabilizing and getting closer to release.
Interesting. That jumped from 0.88 to 2.00 in five days, and Garmin use 2.00 for the firmware installation they expect to release on the first watches sold. (Though sometimes it ends up being higher for last minute bug fixes). Also interesting that the 5x was on 0.88 too, but hasn't had an update yet.
Also interesting in that there are separate software releases (despite having the same version number) for each model of watch. This indicates to me that there are differences in each release. Maybe these differences are as simple as how re-drawing displays of different sizes is handled (i.e. 5S vs. 5), or in the case of the 5X more significant differences like how maps are handled.
In any case, it shows a difference from how the software for the fenix 3 series watches were handled. The fenix 3, tactix Bravo and quatix 3 all shared the same software release. The fenix 3HR had different software as did the epix.
We all know how well (or poorly) the epix product development was handled, it would be a real shame if the fenix 5X were to suffer the same kind of fate as the epix. We also note differences between the fenix 3 and fenix 3HR software performance, e.g. Alti/Baro problems predominantly with the fenix 3HR and not the fenix 3.
I would feel much better if the fenix 5 series of watches all shared the same base software with any particular hardware differences handled by separate software updates like the GUP2015.BIN files are used to update the CIQ software. This would assure the same level of Garmin resources would be directed at the core software for all versions of the fenix 5 thus diminishing the possibility of leaving behind any version orphans. It is obviously too late to re-engineer the whole software development scheme, but I am concerned that all software versions may not be addressed with the same energy going forward.
Yes, you have to wonder why they can't do the same at Clevertraining UK...besides they show the Paypal logo on their site but you can't pay via Paypal
Hmm, interesting. I'll find out why and see if I can get it changed.
I'm pretty sure the codebase will be the same between the F5/F5S/F5X - the hardware is pretty much identical other than there's more storage. I suspect the reality is that the F5X will not be released at the time as the others!
FWIW - Spoke with GPS City customer service and they have no information any more than anyone else regarding the actual arrival of their stock. He said that this was preliminary information only that they cannot confirm and "Garmin is notorious for delays"...
